🚒🚨 This week’s Crew Chronicles features Lieutenant 2, Ethan Bahe.

🚨Im a Senior Geographic Information Science (GIS) Analyst with the Environmental Working Group. All that to say, I combine maps and data to look at patterns to help maintain a healthy environment for people and ecosystems. My wife, Amy, and I recently welcomed our third child. We also have a three and five year old. We have two lab mutts, making for a busy household. In my spare time, when I can find any, I enjoy making things whether it is wood, metal, leather, 3d printing, and anything else I can find.

🚨I grew up in a first responder household with both parents being on an ambulance crew for a few years and my father crossing 40 years of membership in his department in July. That service made joining the St. Joseph department a no brainer. I grew up around his and remember helping around the station and playing on the trucks and I wanted that for my kids as well as a connection to the community.

🚒🔥Crew Chronicles are BACK! Over the next 3 weeks we’re going to feature our 3 new Lieutenants! Starting this week with Lieutenant 1, Eric VanBruggen. 🚨By day, I am an Application Engineer at 3M providing technical expertise and support in commercial floor maintenance and restoration. In short, I’ve been labeled things such as “floor nerd” and “super janitor.” I am totally good with both of those! I also serve part-time as an EMT with New Richmond EMS as well as a Fire Instructor with Northwood Technical College.

🚨Aside from work, I am blessed with an amazing family. My wife Charlotte and I celebrated 11 years of marriage in June and we have 3 awesome kids. Together we enjoy spending time outside mountain biking and enjoying the many gifts that our property has to offer from maple syrup to raspberries, neat rocks, toads, insects (kids mainly - adults not so much...), as well as being active with our church.

🚨I was created with a built-in purpose to serve. From my youngest years, I always had a sense that some type of service was in my future. After my wife and I got married, we pursued different career opportunities in military aviation which unfortunately did not come to fruition. However, during the process, we decided to put in an application to St. Joe Fire as a way to kind of scratch that service itch. I truly had no idea how fulfilling and purposeful that would end up being. It has truly been an honor to serve this community! For the last three years, I have served as a Station Lieutenant assisting with things such as equipment, PPE, training, recruiting, etc... I am very excited to step into this new role as a Lieutenant and continue to serve my community, the members of the department, and my crew!

Last night’s business meeting was a special one for our department!

After months of anticipation, an application and interview process with our Chiefs and our Captains, we are proud to announce the appointment of three new Lieutenants — the first helmeted Lieutenants in St. Joseph Fire & Rescue history!

🎉 Lieutenant Eric Vanbruggen
🎉 Lieutenant Ethan Bahe
🎉 Lieutenant Marc Kupka

We’re excited to welcome Eric, Ethan, and Marc into the officer ranks and look forward to the leadership, knowledge, and experience they’ll bring to our department. Congratulations, Lieutenants — well earned! 👏🔥

Our October business meeting also included planning for upcoming fall and winter events and a recap of last month’s incredibly successful Pancake Breakfast. A huge thank you to Charlie Company for keeping everyone fed with dinner before the meeting!

Following the meeting, our three newest officers wasted no time getting to work and each led a station for our mini training:

🔥 Lt. Kupka — Forcible Entry
🚒 Lt. Vanbruggen — Triple Lay Hose Pull
🫁 Lt. Bahe — SCBA Masking & Tank Refilling

Members rotated through all three stations, getting hands-on practice while sharpening the skills we rely on when it matters most.

An outstanding Monday night spent learning, training, celebrating our members, and continuing to move St. Joseph Fire & Rescue forward.

Congratulations again to our newest Lieutenants!

🚒 Extrication Training🛠️

Last night we took advantage of the cool fall air and got back to work with Part Two of our vehicle extrication training!

Using a donated vehicle, shout out to JAKD Roadside Rescue LLC, members split into two teams and rotated through hands-on practice with the different extrication tools carried on our Engine and Rescue—including cutters, spreaders, combi tools, the K12 and Sawzall.

We started just like we would on an actual scene: one crew stabilized the vehicle with cribbing while the other worked on gaining access under the hood and disabling the battery. From there, the vehicle didn’t stand much of a chance. 😏

Members practiced several techniques for removing the windshield—and naturally, we turned that into a little friendly competition! We worked through multiple methods of removing the doors, giving members who hadn’t used certain tools before the opportunity to learn how they work and then get some hands-on time themselves.

And through all of this… Randy needed rescuing. 😂

One of our EMRs climbed inside to provide patient care while crews continued working around them. Once access was created, Randy was boarded and safely extricated from the vehicle. Mission accomplished! 🙌

Training nights like this give our members the opportunity to learn new skills, practice old ones, ask questions, and become more comfortable with the equipment we’ll depend on when a real call comes in.

Great night of training, teamwork, and learning together! 🚒💪

🥞❤️ THANK YOU❤️🚒

What an AMAZING morning! From all of us at St. Joseph Fire & Rescue, thank you to everyone who came out for our annual Pancake Breakfast and helped make this year such a success!

Whether you came for the pancakes, watched the demos, toured the station, checked out our equipment, or simply stopped by to say hello — your support means more to us than you know. We are incredibly fortunate to serve a community that continues to show up for its volunteer fire department year after year. ❤️

We also owe a couple of HUGE thank-yous to some incredible local businesses who help make this breakfast what it is!

🥞 Willow River Saloon/Carbone's — thank you for your generous donation that helps us serve up those amazing pancakes and sausage every year. Your continued support of our department and this event is greatly appreciated!

🥓 Big Guys BBQ Roadhouse — thank you for once again providing the candied bacon…which, judging by how quickly it disappeared, was DEFINITELY a hit. 🔥

And finally, thank you to all of our members and everyone behind the scenes who put in the time and work to make the morning happen.

Our community shows up for us, and we will always be proud to show up for you. 🚒❤️

Until next year, St. Joseph — THANK YOU! 🥞🔥
