Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office Receives
$111,800 Grant to Improve Road Safety

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office has been awarded a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support ongoing traffic enforcement and public education efforts aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on local roadways.

Deputy Matthew Orr stated the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office provides traffic enforcement and safety services to the communities of Riverbank, Patterson, Hughson and Waterford. Funding provided through the OTS STEP Grant will enhance these efforts by allowing deputies to conduct additional, focused enforcement in areas experiencing traffic safety concerns, with an emphasis on reducing dangerous driving behaviors and preventing crashes.

The grant will support DUl checkpoints and impaired-driving patrols, distracted-driving enforcement, and operations targeting dangerous violations such as speeding, failure to yield, red-light and stop-sign violations, and unsafe turns or lane changes. Funding will also support efforts to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety, community traffic safety education, collaborative enforcement with neighboring agencies, and specialized officer training in impaired-driving detection and evaluation.

“Traffic safety begins with everyday decisions,” OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty said. “When we address the risky driving behaviors that put everyone on the road in danger, including speeding, distraction, and impairment, we can prevent crashes and save lives. By supporting enforcement efforts and educating communities, we’re helping to build a safety culture where looking out for others and safe travel behaviors are the norm.”

The grant program runs through September 2027.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Every speed limit is in place for a reason—to protect lives. Choosing to slow down helps keep our roads safer for drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

Our deputies are committed to traffic safety, but preventing crashes starts with every driver making safe choices behind the wheel. Slow down, obey the posted speed limits, and help us keep our community safe.

Say NO to Illegal Fireworks!

Celebrate responsibly this holiday season by leaving illegal fireworks out of the festivities. In the City of Hughson, the use, possession, or sale of illegal fireworks can result in fines starting at $1,000 and may lead to additional penalties.

Illegal fireworks pose serious risks to our community, including fires, injuries, property damage, and distress for pets, veterans, and neighbors. By choosing safe and legal ways to celebrate, you can help protect our residents, homes, and local resources.

If you witness the use or sale of illegal fireworks, please help keep Hughson safe by reporting the activity to our non-emergency line at 209-552-2468.

Together, we can enjoy a safe, fun, and fire-safe holiday for everyone.
