Between the calls, there’s life at the station. Good company in the hallway, stories around the table, and a ping pong title that’s always up for grabs. The people who show up for you show up for each other first. This is family. This is Eastex Fire Department. 🚒

Fire Prevention Week is October 5-11. Here are three things you can do right now:

1. Test your smoke alarms and change the batteries if needed.
2. Make a fire escape plan and practice it with your family.
3. Keep space heaters, candles, and cooking areas clear of anything flammable.

Eastex Fire Department is here to protect this community. Help us do that by being prepared.

Sparky's whole plan fits on one whiteboard. Yours can too.

Ask your kids tonight where they'd go if the smoke alarm went off. If they have to stop and think about it, the plan isn't finished yet. Walk the house together this weekend and draw it out.

Please help us welcome one of our newest members to the family, Clara Rose Shepherd! Mom and Clara are doing great and we can’t wait to see her around the station!

TIFMAS update: Yesterday another crew swap was needed for ST-191. Captain Perales (ENGB), Firefighter Khalil, and EO Hopkins are ready to provide much needed relief to our wildland team, who has been out fighting wildland fires for the past two weeks. We wish them a safe deployment and thank them for continuing to help the people of Texas. Rain and flooding hazards are in the forecast for portions of Texas. We will continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and will provide updates if any concerns arise.

You have about two minutes once the smoke alarm goes off. That's not enough time to figure out a plan. It's only enough time to use one you already have.

Here's how to build one:

Walk every room and find two ways out. A door and a window. Every room, every floor.
Make sure every window actually opens. If you have security bars, they need a quick release from the inside.
Pick a meeting spot outside that doesn't move. A mailbox, a tree, the neighbor's driveway. Everyone needs to know exactly where to go.
Practice it at least twice a year, and run it at night at least once. Fires don't wait for the daytime.
Get out, call 911 from outside, and never go back in.
Twenty minutes at the kitchen table this weekend. That's all it takes.
