🤒 Know the Signs of the Flu

Flu symptoms often come on suddenly and can range from mild to severe. Knowing the symptoms can help you recognize when you may need to take extra precautions or contact your healthcare provider.

Common flu symptoms include:
🌡️ Fever or feeling feverish/chills
🤧 Runny or stuffy nose
😷 Cough
🗣️ Sore throat
💪 Muscle or body aches
🤕 Headache
😴 Fatigue or tiredness
🤢 Vomiting or diarrhea, which is more common in children

Not everyone with the flu will have a fever.

What should you do if you think you have the flu?
🏠 Stay home and avoid close contact with others except when seeking medical care.
💧 Rest and take care of yourself while your body fights the infection.
📞 Contact your healthcare provider if you are very sick, concerned about your symptoms, or are at higher risk for flu complications. Antiviral medications may be an option and work best when started within 1–2 days after symptoms begin.

😷 If you need to leave home for medical care, cover coughs and sneezes and consider wearing a mask to help protect others.

🚨 Seek emergency medical care for warning signs such as difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, confusion, seizures, severe weakness, or signs of dehydration.

Remember: You don't have to "tough it out" if you're feeling seriously ill. When in doubt, contact your healthcare provider.

🦠 Help Prevent the Flu This Season
Flu spreads easily, but there are simple steps you can take to reduce your risk and help protect those around you.

Here are some ways to help prevent the spread of flu:
💉 Get your flu vaccine each year. Annual vaccination is the most important step for reducing your risk of flu and serious complications.
🧼 Wash your hands often. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren't available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
🤧 Cover your coughs and sneezes. Use a tissue or your elbow—not your hands—and wash your hands afterward.
🙅 Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you're sick, limit contact with others to help prevent spreading the virus.
🏠 Stay home when you're sick. CDC recommends returning to normal activities when your symptoms are improving overall and you've been fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication.
🌬️ Improve indoor air quality. Bringing in fresh outdoor air, using air purification, or spending time outdoors can help reduce exposure to respiratory viruses.
🧴 Clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, countertops and other commonly handled objects.

Small steps can help reduce the spread of flu throughout our community.

🩺 Why the MMR Vaccine Matters 💉

The MMR vaccine, which protects against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, is crucial in keeping these preventable diseases under control. 🚫✨

🔍 When should you get it?
- The first dose is typically given at age 1.
- The second dose is recommended at age 4-6.

🌟 Why is this vaccine so important?
Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death.
Mumps can cause painful swelling of the salivary glands and can lead to hearing loss or infertility.

Rubella (German measles) can cause birth defects if a woman gets infected during pregnancy.

💪 By getting vaccinated, you protect yourself and those around you. Herd immunity relies on enough people being vaccinated to prevent outbreaks, especially for those who can’t be vaccinated due to medical reasons.

Let’s work together to keep our communities safe and disease-free! 🌍❤️

👉🏻How do I know if I’m protected against measles?

Your best bet is to check your vaccination records (you can call us here at Public Health to check your status).

If you don’t have access to your vaccination records or otherwise can’t recall whether you were vaccinated, the easiest thing to do is to get another dose. It is not harmful to get an additional dose of measles vaccine, even if you’ve been vaccinated previously or have natural immunity from prior infection.

The Humboldt County Public Health Department is now offering FREE MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines to all residents!

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread quickly — and cases have been confirmed in Iowa.

🛡️ The best protection against measles is the MMR vaccine. If you or your child have not been vaccinated, talk to your healthcare provider about getting immunized as soon as possible.

😷 Think you might have measles?
Do NOT walk into a clinic, ER, or waiting room.
Please call your healthcare provider FIRST for instructions on how to be seen safely.

📞 You can also call Public Health at 515-332-2492 for guidance.

Let’s work together to protect our community. Stay informed. Get vaccinated. Stay safe. 💉❤️

💚 Today is 988 Day 💚

Today, we’re raising awareness about the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline and reminding our Humboldt County community that help is available when you need it.

Mental health is part of our overall health, and talking about it should be a priority—not a stigma. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, loneliness, or thoughts of su***de, you don't have to face it alone.

📱 Call or text 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You can also reach out to someone you trust. Check in on a friend. Ask a family member how they're really doing. Sometimes, starting the conversation is the first step toward getting help.

💚 It's okay to ask for help.
💚 It's okay to talk about mental health.
💚 You are not alone.

Let's work together to create a community where mental health conversations are met with compassion, understanding, and support.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988. If there is an immediate danger, call 911.
