Huntington City-Township Public Library Your destination to learn, to discover, to gather, to grow. In December of 1901, the School Board of Huntington received a letter from Mr. Carnegie’s offer.

Andrew Carnegie, offering $25,000 for the er****on of a Library building. In January of 1902, the Board formally accepted Mr. After much debate, a site was selected and building began. The Carnegie building was opened to the public on February 21, 1903. It marked the first time a library in Huntington was provided with separate facilities and recognized as an individual institution. The Carnegie library contained about 8,300 volumes when it opened. Through the years, trends have come and gone. Our Library’s first audiovisual materials – stereographic slides and Victrola records – have given way to Blu-Ray and eBooks. An online catalog has replaced traditional card catalogs, which, in turn, had replaced simple lists of titles and authors. However, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Our number-one priority is still providing outstanding library services to our patrons, although we have many, many more materials to go around than we did in 1903! And as always, our librarians and other staff members are ready to make book recommendations, answer reference questions, and assist you in any way they can!

On October 6, 1866, the first-ever robbery of a moving train in U.S. history was committed in Indiana.

Now, 160 years later, we're traveling back in time for our next Mischief and Mayhem interactive challenge: The Great Train Robbery!

Immerse yourself in the 1860s as you look for clues, identify the culprits, and perhaps locate the missing treasure. 💰🚂

The puzzle room will be open from October 5–10, Monday through Thursday from 3–8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so bring your friends. This self-led program is monitored by staff, and is recommended for adults and teens.

We've posted audio recordings of our library board meetings for a few months now, as we firmly believe our community should be updated on their library whether or not attending the meeting itself is an option.

Starting this month, we're going to include a written summary of the meeting as well. Posted to our blog, it will briefly cover topics of discussion and decisions made and include timestamps to the major sections of the recording.

You can read the summary of our September meeting here: https://www.huntingtonpub.lib.in.us/news/september-board-meeting-update/

Our board meetings are the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 5:15 p.m. and open to the public. Our goal is to have these summaries up by the following Wednesday alongside the recording. If keeping up on board happenings is important to you, write the 4th Wednesday in your calendar so you know to check our page for the latest news!

September’s board meeting adopted the 2027 tax levy, approved a new Book-A-Librarian policy, and discussed the 2027-2031 Strategic Plan.

Every day our library has patrons sitting in our study rooms, study booths, tables and chairs, all using our free public WiFi. On Synchronous Learning days the library is crammed with students tackling schoolwork on their laptops. Our public computers see job applications, benefits requests, and emails sent to friends and loved ones from 9 a.m. until we close.

Every day, affordable internet at public libraries helps the entire community by providing access to what has now become a requirement to living in society. In June the FCC introduced a proposal that questions the existence of this program. Everyone who pays an internet bill knows how expensive internet access is—now imagine that bill on the scale of a public library. On average, E-Rate saves us 60% of our internet cost each month.

If the library continuing to offer internet to the public is important to you, you can send a comment to Congress to support E-Rate's continued existence by following the instructions here:https://www.ala.org/sites/default/files/2026-08/Save%20Our%20E-Rate%20Template%20FINAL.pdf

It's not the quickest or easiest process, but this money is incredibly important to libraries and schools so your effort is greatly appreciated. Comments will be accepted until October 13.
