Dating back to the colonial era, many Long Island farms raised sheep for wool used in clothing and household textiles. Each spring, farmers sheared sheep by hand using steel blade shears, a scissor-like tool operated manually. Today, sheep are typically shorn with electric clippers, which allow the process to be completed more quickly and efficiently, as demonstrated by the skilled at our Sheep to Shawl festival. 🐑
