What an amazing opportunity for members of the Huntington Fire Department today!

A big thank you to Mayor Patrick Farrell and Councilwoman Stacy Jo Holley for allowing us to tag along and be part of Mountain Readers Become Leaders at Altizer Elementary.

Any chance we get to spend time with our students, talk about what we do, and hopefully make a positive impact is time well spent. We had a great afternoon reading, answering questions, showing off the trucks, and connecting with some awesome kids.

Thank you for having us! 🚒📚❤️

The Huntington Fire Department would like to thank the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and everyone involved in hosting today’s West Virginia Fire Safety Summit in Charleston.

Several HFD firefighters were in attendance, joining fire service professionals, community partners, and NFPA representatives from both West Virginia and across the country for a great day of discussion and networking.

Opportunities like this allow our members to learn from professionals beyond our own department and state, build valuable relationships, and bring new ideas and knowledge back to Huntington as we continue working to keep our community safe.

A big thank you to Cabell County EMS for spending time with our personnel this morning for some valuable joint training.

CCEMS provided our firefighters with hands-on familiarization with their equipment and how we can best assist their crews when called upon during an emergency. Training together makes both agencies stronger and better prepared to serve our community.

We also had the opportunity to utilize CCEMS’s new simulation lab, which is an impressive training resource and a great addition to public safety in our area.

We appreciate the continued partnership with CCEMS.

One community. Working together.

We are incredibly proud of Captain Alan Roby, Fire Marshal for the Huntington Fire Department, on being named the 2026 FMAWV Life Safety Advocate of the Year.

Captain Roby’s work is a perfect example of what fire prevention is supposed to accomplish. Preventing tragedy and saving lives before an emergency ever occurs.

🏆 FMAWV 2026 LIFE SAFETY ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR 🏆

During today’s Fire Marshals Association of West Virginia Business Meeting in Martinsburg, FMAWV President Bobby Palmer was honored to present Captain Alan Roby, Fire Marshal for the City of Huntington, with the Association’s 2026 Life Safety Advocate of the Year Award.

This award is selected by the FMAWV Board of Directors from nominations submitted to the Association, and Captain Roby received multiple nominations recognizing his dedication and contributions to fire and life safety.

Captain Roby has been instrumental in building and managing a comprehensive fire marshal program for the City of Huntington. His work includes inspections and enforcement, plan review, fire investigation, public education, residential fire sprinkler advocacy, smoke alarm installation, and partnerships focused on making his community safer.

Perhaps one of the greatest examples of the impact of that work comes from Huntington’s smoke alarm installation program. Through the program, administered in partnership with the American Red Cross, NINE PEOPLE HAVE SURVIVED two separate residential fires after smoke alarms installed through the program alerted them to the fires. His program saves lives, that's a fact!

That is fire prevention. That is life safety advocacy. And most importantly, that is lives saved.

One of Captain Roby’s nominators described his approach to life safety as “not as a job description but as a calling.” His work and commitment to his community demonstrate exactly why he was selected for this recognition.

Please join President Bobby Palmer, the FMAWV Board of Directors, and our membership in congratulating Captain Alan Roby, the 2026 FMAWV Life Safety Advocate of the Year! 🚒🏆

Congratulations, Captain Roby, and thank you for your continued dedication to protecting lives and advancing the fire and life safety profession throughout West Virginia.

Today, members of the Huntington Fire Department conducted joint rope rescue training at Steel of West Virginia, sharpening the specialized skills required to operate safely and effectively in challenging industrial environments.

Opportunities like this allow our firefighters to train where the hazards are real, strengthen teamwork, and prepare for the complex emergencies our community and industrial partners may face.

We appreciate Steel of West Virginia for opening their facility to our crews and supporting this valuable hands-on training.
