Seeing the support for new soccer fields for our youth is inspiring. Credit to Chris Miller, his family, and everyone who helped make this possible.

Having served as a branch director at the Huntington YMCA, I know how much it matters for kids to have a place to play, grow, and belong.

One of the reasons I went into business was to build something that would put me in a position to give back to my community. This is the kind of impact I hope to make through Fairfield’s Kitchen & Bakery.

When people invest in our kids, that deserves acknowledgment. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Did you know a bill can die in the West Virginia Legislature without ever receiving a vote?

After a bill is introduced, it is assigned to a committee. But that does not guarantee it will be placed on the agenda, publicly discussed or voted on.

If the committee never takes it up, the bill can sit there until time runs out.

That means legislators may never have to publicly support it, oppose it, or explain their position to the people they represent.

Not every bill deserves a hearing. Some are filed to make a point, not to pass. But bills with real public support and consequence shouldn’t quietly expire.

So when a bill dies, we should ask:

Was it given a hearing?
Was there a committee vote?
Who had the authority to move it forward?
Why was it allowed to expire?

Sometimes the most powerful decision in government is not voting against a bill. It is making sure the vote never happens.

The most basic part of this job is to do the job, bring it to a hearing, take the vote, and answer for it. That’s the standard I’m running on for District 5.

Next time you hear a bill “died in committee,” ask your legislator: did it get a hearing, and if not, why not?
