Drake State Community & Technical College Drake State Community & Technical College, located in Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville State Vocational Technical School was one of these schools. F.

The Beginnings of a Rich History

In 1961, Governor George Wallace founded a group of state, two-year technical institutions to support the technical/vocational career education needs of African Americans. Its original campus covered 30 acres of land deeded by Alabama A & M University to the Alabama Board of Education, and the new college opened its doors in 1962 with 27 students enrolled in four programs – auto mechanics, cosmetology, electronics, and masonry. In 1966, the school changed its name to J. Drake State Technical Trade School in honor of the late Joseph Fanning Drake, long-time president of Alabama A&M University. The Alabama State Board of Education granted Drake State technical college status in 1973 and adjusted its name to J. Drake State Technical College, allowing the school to offer the Associate in Applied Technology Degree (AAT). Another modern educational enhancement involved Drake State’s dedication to the community. In 2010, the college spearheaded a move into downtown Huntsville by offering classes in the historic Times Building on Holmes Avenue. This had a positive impact not only on the school’s enrollment, but also on the city’s downtown development – adding students to the downtown business landscape to stimulate rejuvenation of the urban area. In January 2012, Drake State began its membership with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This landmark achievement ensured transferability of general education courses and streamlined student transitions from two-year degrees into university programs anywhere in the United States – a tremendous enhancement for the school and its students. The final step in establishing the school’s identity came in July of 2013 when the college officially became J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College. Its name accurately depicts its standing as both a comprehensive community college and a core-driven technical college – the best of both worlds.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Paint Me Pink event in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🎀

Drake State’s Nail Care students had the opportunity to put their skills into practice while providing free manicures to members of our campus and community. The event was a wonderful way to raise awareness, foster connection, and support a cause that impacts so many lives.

We are proud of our students for using their talents to serve others and help promote the importance of early detection, education, and community support.

Drake State Adult Education students gained valuable hands-on construction experience while helping complete a unique community project.

Through a partnership with the North Alabama Homebuilding Academy (NAHA) and Nexus Energy Center, students refurbished a donated model tiny home as part of the Advanced Carpentry program. Supported by a $12,000 grant from Nexus Energy Center, the project provided real-world workforce training while creating a mobile resource that will educate communities across North Alabama about energy-efficiency practices.

This collaboration demonstrates how education, industry, and nonprofit partners can work together to create meaningful opportunities for student success and lasting community impact.

It’s !

Scholarships do more than help cover the cost of college. They give students the opportunity to stay focused on their education and continue working toward their future.

This week, we’re highlighting the impact of the Regions Scholarship and celebrating 2026 recipient Cory Baker. In Cory’s words, the scholarship helps ease the financial responsibilities of attending college while providing encouragement to keep working hard and making the most of every opportunity ahead.

We’re grateful to Regions for investing in Drake State students and supporting their educational and career goals.

🎓 Every scholarship is an investment in a student’s future.

A few hours of teamwork can make a world of difference.

This morning, Dr. Sims had the pleasure of rolling up her sleeves and blessing a family alongside Dr. Bill Sullins of Sleep in Heavenly Peace - AL, Huntsville to build a bunk bed for a local family here in Huntsville.

Tonight, Zion (3) and Naima (5) will have beds of their own! And they're SO excited!

As we move into fall and the season of giving, we're reminded that making a difference isn't about grand gestures. Sometimes, it just takes a few willing hands, a couple of hours, and a shared commitment.

We're grateful for the work of Sleep in Heavenly Peace and the volunteers who help ensure that children in our community have a safe, comfortable place to rest.

A little time. A little teamwork. A lasting impact.

🖥️ From an idea to a 3D model!

Today’s Try A Trade session put the spotlight on Engineering & Design, giving participants a hands-on look at how technology helps bring designs to life.
Participants worked with 3D models and explored the tools and techniques used to turn concepts into detailed digital designs. Experiences like these give participants a chance to try something new, build practical skills, and discover the career possibilities available in technical fields.

At Drake State, sometimes the best way to find your path is to try the trade!

Community support makes a difference. 💙🦅

On Monday, Drake State welcomed a generous donation of feminine hygiene supplies from the Greater Huntsville Area Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women to our Blue Eagle Market.

These essential items will help the Blue Eagle Market continue providing valuable resources to Drake State students.

We are grateful to the organization and to Public Policy Chair Nesha Wright for supporting student success and well-being beyond the classroom.

Thank you for investing in our students and helping our Blue Eagles soar!

Drake State was proud to welcome the North Alabama Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA® Chapter 28-2) back to campus on Saturday for its monthly meeting.

Approximately 60 members gathered at the Leidos Training Facility for a morning of fellowship, connection, and camaraderie. This marks the second time Drake State has hosted the organization, further strengthening a partnership centered on supporting Veterans and military-connected students.

We are especially grateful for the CVMA®'s continued generosity. Through its support of Drake State Veteran students, the organization has contributed more than $22,000 in gift cards to help students through the holiday season.

Providing a place for Veterans to gather is one way we demonstrate our commitment to those who have served. We are honored to support the Veteran community and look forward to continuing this valued partnership.
