TDCJ - O.B. Ellis Unit The O.B. Ellis Unit opened in July 1965 in Huntsville, Texas and operates under Region I of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The Ellis Unit was named after Mr. Oscar Byron Ellis, who served in Texas as general manager of the prison system from January 1, 1948 until November 12, 1961. The Texas legislature enacted a law in 1957 that changed his title to Director and the name of the state penal institution to Texas Department of Corrections, now known as the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The O.B. Ellis Unit proudly came together to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness with a special Pink Out, showing our support for those who have been affected by breast cancer and honoring the survivors, fighters, and loved ones who continue to face this battle every day. ๐Ÿฉท

Breast cancer awareness is about more than wearing pink, it is about spreading knowledge, encouraging early detection, promoting regular screenings, and reminding one another of the importance of taking charge of our health. Early detection can make a significant difference, and knowing the signs and understanding your risk can help save lives.

Our Pink Out represents unity, compassion, hope, and the strength that comes from standing together for a meaningful cause. We are proud of our Ellis Unit family for helping raise awareness and demonstrating that even small acts of support can make a lasting impact.

The O.B. Ellis Unit proudly hosted the Bill Glass โ€“ Behind the Walls Ministry, a faith-based outreach dedicated to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and bringing hope, encouragement, and spiritual guidance to incarcerated individuals. Founded in 1969, this ministry partners with churches and volunteers across the country to reach individuals within correctional facilities through faith, personal testimony, and meaningful conversations.

Through these outreach events, trained volunteers engage directly with incarcerated individuals, share Scripture, discuss the message of salvation, and offer personal testimonies of faith, perseverance, and overcoming adversity. The program also brings in engaging guest speakers and individuals with inspiring life experiences to help connect with the population and demonstrate how faith can provide direction during difficult circumstances.

This visit provided a valuable opportunity for our population to receive encouragement, reflect on past decisions, and consider the possibilities of personal transformation. By offering messages of hope, forgiveness, redemption, and personal responsibility, the ministry supports the broader rehabilitative mission of helping incarcerated individuals work toward meaningful and lasting change.

๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ๐Ÿ† The O.B. Ellis Unit proudly hosted an exciting basketball and volleyball tournament between medium custody and program inmates, bringing energy, teamwork, and friendly competition to the recreation yard!

With the support and dedication of our correctional staff, these activities provided participants with an opportunity to demonstrate sportsmanship, discipline, respect, and teamwork in a positive and structured environment.

At the Ellis Unit, we believe recreation plays an important role in rehabilitation by promoting physical fitness, reducing stress, strengthening social skills, and encouraging positive interactions. Through opportunities like these, we continue to support rehabilitation, encourage positive behavior, and create an environment where individuals can develop valuable life skills that contribute to a more successful future.

The O.B. Ellis Unit proudly congratulates our Region 1 Unity Cup Soccer Team on advancing to the Finals after an exciting 2โ€“1 victory over the Holliday Unit in a friendly match!

This accomplishment represents more than a win on the soccer field. It represents teamwork, dedication, sportsmanship, commitment, and the strong bond we share as coworkers and as a family. Events like the Unity Cup remind us that when we come together, support one another, and work toward a common goal, we are stronger as a team and as a unit.

Ms. Cox began her career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice 13 years ago as a Correctional Officer and has dedicated her career to serving the agency, working in both Correctional Officer and Law Library Assistant roles. The O.B. Ellis Unit Law Library plays a vital role in supporting the inmate population by providing access to essential legal resources and guidance. Through its services, incarcerated individuals are given the opportunity to better understand the legal system, prepare legal documents, and stay informed on matters that impact their cases and futures.

Under the leadership of Law Library Supervisor Ms. Pharries, the department continues to set a high standard of professionalism and dedication. Alongside her team, Mr. Meador and Ms. Cox, they work diligently to ensure that all individuals are provided with the assistance they need. Their commitment to service, organization, and accuracy helps maintain a structured and accessible environment for legal research and support.

In addition to providing legal materials, the Law Library facilitates over-the-phone court hearings, virtual court proceedings, and one-on-one meetings between attorneys and their incarcerated clients. These services are critical in ensuring timely access to the courts and maintaining communication between legal counsel and those they represent.

The O.B. Ellis Unit is proud of the Law Library staff for their continued efforts in their respective role!
