🔥 FIRE PREVENTION STARTS BEFORE THE EMERGENCY 🔥

The Huron Fire Department offers Courtesy Fire & Safety Inspections to local businesses upon request.

These inspections are designed to be proactive, educational, and helpful. Our goal is to work with business owners and occupants to identify potential fire and life-safety concerns before they contribute to an emergency.

During a courtesy inspection, HFD personnel can help identify concerns involving:

• Fire and life-safety hazards
• Emergency exits and access
• Fire extinguishers
• Exit and emergency lighting
• Electrical or storage concerns
• Fire alarm and sprinkler system considerations
• General housekeeping and combustible materials
• Emergency access for responding firefighters

Why request an inspection?

A fresh set of eyes can sometimes identify hazards that are easily overlooked during normal day-to-day operations. Addressing small concerns early can help protect your employees, customers, property, and business operations while also helping firefighters become more familiar with your building should an emergency occur.

These are courtesy inspections requested by the business or occupant and are intended to promote fire prevention, education, and a safer community.

đźš’ Prevention is one of the most effective tools we have in the fire service.

If your business would like to request a Courtesy Fire & Safety Inspection, contact the Huron Fire Department to schedule a visit.

The Huron Fire Department would like to recognize Firefighter C**t Florey for the time, effort, and initiative he continues to put into improving training within our department.

C**t recently developed and presented a class titled “The First 5 Minutes,” focused on one of the most important periods of any fire incident—the first few minutes after our arrival.

Those initial actions can set the tone for the entire incident. Establishing command, completing an effective size-up, identifying priorities, communicating clearly, deploying resources, and making sound tactical decisions all have to happen quickly. Getting those things right early helps create a safer, more organized, and more efficient operation for everyone who follows.

As a South Dakota Certified Fire Instructor and Lead Instructor capable of evaluating firefighters, C**t brings both knowledge and experience to our training program. More importantly, he continues to step forward and take the initiative to create training opportunities rather than simply participate in them.

C**t has invested his own time in developing classes and training opportunities that benefit firefighters at all levels—not only within HFD, but also firefighters from surrounding departments and agencies.

That commitment to teaching also comes with a commitment to learning. C**t continues to invest in his own education, knowledge, and capabilities so he can bring that information back and help make those around him better.

Strong departments are built by members who take ownership, continue learning, and are willing to share what they know with others.

Thank you, Firefighter C**t Florey, for stepping up, putting in the work, and continuing to invest in the firefighters around you and the future of the Huron Fire Department.

The first five minutes matter—and so does being prepared before they ever begin.

The Huron Fire Department would like to recognize Firefighter Tyler Waldner for his continued commitment to professional development and improving our department’s capabilities.

Tyler recently completed a week-long Emergency Vehicle Technician training program, receiving specialized hands-on and classroom training involving fire apparatus systems, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, electrical systems, aerial apparatus, and other components unique to emergency vehicles.

Following this training and certification process, Tyler currently holds Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications in:

🔧 Maintenance, Inspection & Testing of Fire Apparatus
⚡ Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems
đźš’ Aerial Fire Apparatus

Fire apparatus are complex, highly specialized pieces of equipment, and maintaining them requires knowledge well beyond basic vehicle maintenance. Tyler has taken the initiative to develop that knowledge and serves an important role in helping HFD maintain, troubleshoot, and perform basic repairs on our apparatus.

Having a qualified EVT within our department allows us to identify problems earlier, reduce apparatus downtime, improve preventative maintenance, and perform many repairs in-house rather than relying entirely on outside service providers. That translates directly into improved readiness for our firefighters and potential cost savings for the City of Huron.

Just as importantly, Tyler’s efforts are an example of what we want to encourage throughout HFD: continue learning, develop your skills, take ownership of an area, and bring that knowledge back to make the entire department better.

Congratulations to Firefighter Tyler Waldner on these accomplishments, and thank you for investing the time and effort to continue improving yourself and the Huron Fire Department.
