Amy Werrett for Hurricane City Council

Directions

Amy Werrett for Hurricane City Council Vote for me because I am passionate about helping citizens feel understood and represented fairly.

I am running for city council because I am a concerned citizen who would love to contribute to keeping Hurricane a family friendly city with affordable housing and plentiful jobs so that our children will want to live and work here as adults. I have been a speech/language pathologist for the local school district for 15 years. I help students learn to be effective communicators and I want to bring my expertise in communication skills to the community and help my neighbors, friends, and community have a voice in what happens in Hurricane. I want to earn your vote and trust that your voice will be respected and represented!

In the Loop – October 19, 2026

We wrapped up our Town Hall meetings this past week, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to attend, share concerns, and offer ideas. Your interest and involvement make our community stronger, and we plan to continue these meetings in the future.

Tomorrow, 10/20/26, I’ll be meeting with the regional director of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to discuss several traffic concerns raised during our meetings. Many involve SR-9, a state highway, including right-turn lanes, left-turn lanes, traffic lights, and left-turn signals. We’ll discuss what improvements may be possible and how we can move toward solutions.

Now, on to something a little different: The Great November Tumbleweed Roundup.

Tumbleweeds are a big problem in our community. As they dry out and the winds pick up, they can pile up against homes, cover vehicles, block garages, and even trap people in their own driveways. I’ve already sent 30 notices to developers asking them to clean up their properties, and I’ve contacted UDOT about clearing tumbleweeds along the highway. For the next month, I’m declaring war on tumbleweeds!

We’re planning a November contest to see who can collect the most tumbleweeds, with cash prizes of $250 for first place, $150 for second place, and $100 for third place. Our community goal is to collect 100,000 tumbleweeds in November. That may sound like a lot, but I suspect it’s only a fraction of what’s out there. I’m also pledging to collect 1,000 tumbleweeds myself.

On November 14 at 10:00 a.m., I plan to organize a community roundup on a UDOT-owned property at approximately 1375 W and State Street. The lot is covered in tumbleweeds, and I’d love to see how many volunteers we can get together to clear it.

Watch for more details about the Great November Tumbleweed Roundup and how you can participate. Let’s work together to keep Hurricane clean, safe, and tumbleweed-free!

Thank you for being part of our community.

We’ve accepted the bid for the 100 South project, and work is expected to begin within the next couple of weeks. The project will include replacing asphalt and installing new utility lines along 100 South between Main Street and 300 West, as well as along 200 West from 100 South to 200 South. This work will cause some temporary inconvenience, especially for those accessing the Community Center. During construction, consider using Main Street to access the parking lot on the east side of the building. We appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing these improvements completed.

Thank you to everyone who has attended our neighborhood Town Hall meetings. We’ve had good participation and appreciate hearing what matters to you. We’re already making some adjustments based on your feedback, while other longer-term concerns are being compiled for further review and action. We look forward to continuing these conversations with you.

City Council meeting is this Thursday, 10/15/26. We'll discuss enforcement of vacation rentals. We’ve received concerns and want to make sure the process is clear and consistent, including what constitutes a violation or “strike,” how concerns can be reported, and how violations are reviewed and penalties determined. This is a discussion item only. If the Council determines changes are needed, the ordinance may be brought back for further consideration. Anyone interested is welcome to attend and participate.

With the recent storms, I want to recognize and thank our Street Department crews for working diligently to keep storm drains clear and water flowing. Some puddling remains in low spots along streets and curbs, and those areas may need attention in the future. Our crews have worked hard to help keep our community safe during these storms, and I appreciate their efforts.

We’re grateful for the rain and thankful for the dedicated employees who help keep Hurricane running safely, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate!

If you have any concerns, please contact the City Office at 435-635-2811, Ext. 111, and you will be directed to the appropriate staff member, City Council member, or to me.

In the Loop – October 5, 2026

On Thursday night, the City Council approved two resolutions authorizing bond issues for important projects we are preparing to move forward with.

One bond will help fund a new police station and city office. The second will fund a power substation beyond 3,000 South, the remaining components of the Sky Mountain substation, and the power line connecting the two substations along SR7.

These resolutions are an early step in the bonding process. They establish the maximum amount the City can borrow and the interest rate, with additional steps required before the bonds are finalized. While these projects are expected to be ready to move forward around the first of the year, we need to begin the bonding process now. With interest rates rising, we want to secure the best possible rate and keep these projects on track.

I also met Friday with a group of women who have done an incredible job helping residents affected by the recent flooding. They have found resources, gathered donations and helped people navigate everything from temporary housing to cleaning up and rebuilding their homes. Their willingness to volunteer has been a tremendous asset to our community.

We also discussed the possibility of establishing an Emergency Preparedness Committee or Board to help residents know where to turn during a flood, fire or other emergency. When you are dealing with damage or loss, knowing who to contact and what resources are available can be overwhelming.

These women have gained valuable firsthand experience and could be a tremendous resource for our residents. We will be discussing this idea at an upcoming City Council meeting.

I am grateful for everyone who has stepped up to help our neighbors and for those willing to continue finding ways to make Hurricane better prepared for the future.

In the Loop - September 28, 2026

One of the things I’ve really enjoyed about our Town Hall meetings is having the opportunity to hear directly from residents about what is important to them and what they are seeing in their neighborhoods. We’ve held four meetings so far, and one topic that has come up at nearly every meeting is traffic and transportation.

We’ve heard concerns about speeding, speed limit signs, right-turn lanes, hash-lines, left-turn arrows and visibility at intersections. Some of these, particularly those involving State Street, will need to be discussed with UDOT. Our City engineer will also review these requests to see if they meet the necessary requirements. Other concerns involve City streets, and we will look at those as well. Some solutions may take time, but we appreciate you bringing these concerns to us.

We’ve also heard concerns about being able to see around some intersections. If you live on a corner, please take a drive around your neighborhood and look at the intersections near your home. Can you easily see approaching traffic? Trees and bushes may need to be trimmed, and sometimes parking needs to be moved farther back from the intersection. Trees over sidewalks also need to be trimmed high enough for people to walk safely. The City has the authority to address these issues, but we would much rather have property owners take care of them voluntarily.

Speeding is another issue that really takes all of us. We can have officers patrol and issue warnings or citations, and we can use speed trailers to remind us how fast we’re going, but ultimately, we all have to do our part. Especially around schools, neighborhoods and busy intersections, let's slow down and pay attention.

We will continue working on the concerns you bring to us, but keeping Hurricane safe is something we all have a part in. Please take a look at your property, pay attention when you’re driving and give yourself a little extra time so you don’t have to hurry.

Working together, we can make Hurricane a safer place for all of us.
