In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.
Please join us on Friday, May 15th, 2026, at 11 AM in front of the Law Enforcement Center. We will honor the lives of those officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving our great country.
On July 2nd, 1924, Officer Reason Sherman Monroe went to Brubaker Grocery store, located at 123 S. Adams, to locate a suspect who had earlier pistol whipped his wife. When Officer Monroe confronted the suspect, the suspect picked up his four-year-old son and used him as a shield, as he shot at Officer Monroe. Officer Monroe refused to return fire in fear that he would strike the young child, and he was shot multiple times. Officer Monroe was transported to Grace Methodist hospital, located at 7th and Main, where he died from his injuries on July 3rd,1924.

On Friday, September 15th, 1972, Officer Kenneth Kennedy, and Reserve Officer Michael Coldren went to 918 South Plum in plain clothes and attempted to buy liquor in violation of the law. After the undercover purchase of illegal liquor, the officers attempted to arrest the male suspect, and a fight ensued. A female exited the kitchen area during the struggle and shot both officers. Officer Ken Kennedy return fire and struck the female suspect twice. Officer Kennedy pulled the trigger two more times on his revolver but did not have the strength to have the hammer fall. Officer Ken Kennedy succumbed to his injuries and died on scene. Officer Coldren was rendered unconscious from a gunshot to the head and when he regained consciousness summoned help. The section of K-61 that runs through Hutchinson was named in honor of Officer Kennedy.

Happy Mother's Day!
Meet Dominic, Letty, and Zelda.
Dominic and Letty are 11-month-old Akita mix siblings who have been at the Hutchinson Animal Shelter since May 2nd, 2026. Because they arrived as stray dogs from another shelter that did not have enough space for them, not much is known about their background. Zelda, a pit mix, also came to the shelter as a stray, so her history is limited as well.
Recently, Dominic, Letty, and Zelda enjoyed a morning adventure through the Strataca Salt Mine, where they took in the unique sights and history of this Hutchinson landmark. Detective Secretary Brittney spent the morning with Dominic, Detective Sergeant Kelly accompanied Zelda, and Evidence Technician Megan explored with Letty.
Brittney and Dominic filled the morning with laughter and energy. Dominic keeps his kennel clean at the shelter and loves every opportunity to play. Megan and Letty shared a well-balanced morning full of cuddles and fun. Letty also keeps her kennel clean and enjoys soaking up as many pets and as much affection as possible. Sergeant Kelly and Zelda made the morning especially calm and sweet, with plenty of stops for snuggles and kisses. Zelda keeps her kennel clean and enjoys spending time with people she knows and trusts.
According to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter, Dominic, Letty, and Zelda are all playmates and have a great time together. During their adventure at Strataca, Brittney, Sergeant Kelly, and Megan all agreed the dogs especially enjoyed spending part of Mother’s Day with them. Because Dominic and Letty are siblings, the shelter would prefer that they be adopted together, though it is not required since they are not bonded.
Special thank you to Strataca, located at 3650 E Ave G, for allowing us to take pictures at your amazing museum!
Let’s find Dominic, Letty and Zelda a permanent home! If you are interested in seeing one of them, or any other available animals up for adoption, please contact the Hutchinson Animal Shelter at (620)694-1924 or visit them at 1501 South Severance Street.
The Animal Shelter offers a year-round special discount to adopters who are veterans or first responders! Adopter(s) must ask for this discount and provide a valid military work ID as proof of their status, and the adoption fee will be ½ priced.

Congratulations to Traffic Officer Lane Hammond on receiving the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP) Silver Award in recognition of his lifesaving actions in 2025.
On October 2nd, 2025, officers were dispatched to a reported stabbing at a residence inside the city limits. The incident occurred at a residence adjacent to the home of Traffic Officer Hammond. Dispatch advised that the victim, an 85-year-old male, had sustained self-inflicted lacerations. The initial call for assistance was made by the victim’s daughter, who ran to Traffic Officer Hammond’s residence after discovering her father surrounded by a significant amount of blood.
When responding officers arrived they found Traffic Officer Hammond already on scene administering lifesaving first aid by applying direct pressure to the victim’s wounds with a towel to control the severe bleeding, while simultaneously maintaining communication with dispatch by phone. His swift and decisive actions were critical in sustaining the victim until emergency medical personnel arrived.
The victim was transported by medical responders to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized and underwent surgery for his injuries. He was expected to make a full recovery.
