🌱 It's Grass Season, Hutchinson! 🌱

With warmer temperatures and spring rains, grass and w**ds are growing quickly across our community. Now is a great time to stay on top of mowing and property maintenance, including sidewalks, alleys, and rights-of-way adjacent to your property.

Keeping grass and w**ds trimmed does more than improve curb appeal. It also helps reduce places where pests, rodents, insects, and other unwanted critters can live and hide. Grass, w**ds, and indigenous vegetation over 12 inches may be considered a nuisance under City Code.

To help residents stay ahead of the growing season, the City has begun using courtesy door hangers that provide a 72-hour reminder to address concerns before a formal notice is issued.

Once a formal notice is served, property owners have 10 days to bring the property into compliance. Please remember that only one formal w**d notice is issued per calendar year. After that, if grass or w**ds exceed 12 inches, the City may mow the property and assess abatement costs, a $150 administrative fee, and related charges to the property.

A little mowing goes a long way in helping keep Hutchinson clean, safe, and beautiful for everyone.

With the amount of rain falling in a short period of time today and potentially the next few days, some temporary street flooding and standing water can occur - especially during peak rainfall.

The good news is that Hutchinson’s drainage ditches, stormwater infrastructure, and levee system are actively doing what they are designed to do: move large amounts of water safely through the community as quickly as possible.

City crews have also been out proactively cleaning inlets and checking stormwater infrastructure to help ensure everything continues running smoothly during these rain events.

When rainfall happens faster than storm drains can immediately collect it, temporary ponding in low areas may still occur. Residents are encouraged to slow down, avoid driving through standing water, and continue using caution during heavy rain events.

This week, volunteers spent their time planting flowers and cleaning up flower beds along Main Street, and we simply want to say thank you.

Acts of volunteerism like this may seem small to some, but they make a lasting impact on a community. These volunteers gave their time, energy, and care to help create a Downtown that feels welcoming and full of pride. Their efforts are a reminder that the heart of Hutchinson has always been the people willing to show up and invest in the place they call home.
