The DSPs who came before us fought like hell.

They fought to get people with disabilities out of institutions and into homes, neighborhoods and communities. Our elders in the field helped move us forward in ways we should never take for granted.

And then sometimes we look around and realize…

changing the address didn’t automatically change everything else.

Sometimes five adults still have to go to Walmart because one wants to go.

Sometimes “their home” runs on a staff schedule.

Sometimes choice gets a little harder when the choice is inconvenient.

Sometimes safety quietly becomes restriction.

Sometimes helping turns into deciding.

Not because DSPs are bad at this.

Actually, a lot of this happens while really good people are trying really hard to help.

That’s what makes it worth looking at.

So we’re going to.

No pretending we’ve got it all figured out.

Just some radical honesty about the little pieces of the institution that may have followed us home.

And maybe a willingness to ask:

Why do we still do it that way?

***Our elders fought like hell to get people out of institutions. We honor that fight—and we’re continuing it. Because sometimes we still find traces of the institution hiding in ordinary homes, routines and expectations. The building is gone. Let’s keep looking for what followed us home.***
