Please join us as we gather to honor and remember Fred Maholland, a Vietnam veteran, Purple Heart recipient and dedicated member of the Idyllwild Honor Guard whose life and legacy touched many in our community. Over the years, Fred took part in many ceremonies with steadfast service and deep respect.

Friends, family, fellow veterans, and all who knew him are invited to come together for a Celebration of Life and memorial service. We will share memories, raise a toast, and honor Fred’s service, friendship, and lasting impact. This will be a potluck, and we welcome you to bring a dish to share as we gather in fellowship and remembrance.

In the heart of town, American Legion Post 800 brought our community together for a moving flag retirement ceremony and the raising of a new American flag at Idyllwild Park. The 13-point fold ceremony, representing conflicts throughout United States history, was a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice that have shaped our nation.

Local post member and veteran Paul White emceed the ceremony, which was overseen by Rotary President and Legion Commander Nacho Garcia. We were also honored by the presence of David Butterfield, Riverside County Supervisor Manuel Perez, Mayor Max, and staff members Phyllis and Glenn.

With 150–200 residents and visitors gathered in near silence, the respect in the air was unmistakable. Many were visibly moved. Post 800 also shared commemorative pins and small American flags, adding a heartfelt touch to an already meaningful day.

Thank you to everyone who organized, attended, and took part—and above all, to our veterans. Your service continues to unite and inspire this town. What part of the ceremony stayed with you most? ❤️🤍💙

Saturday, May 23rd at 12:00 p.m. — Flag Ceremony at Idyllwild Park (Town Center)

Saturday, May 23rd from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. — Barbecue featuring pork ribs, baked beans, and coleslaw, $20 per person

Saturday, May 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. — Free community concert at the American Legion featuring live music by The Stereo Purrs

Monday, Memorial Day at 11:00 a.m. — Special Flag Ceremony at the back of the American Legion to honor veterans

We welcome the whole community to stand with us, celebrate together, and pay tribute to the brave men and women whose service and sacrifice we will never forget.
