Self-advocacy means understanding your needs, knowing your strengths and communicating what helps you succeed at work.

It can look like asking questions, requesting an accommodation, sharing your goals, expressing your preferences or speaking up when something isn’t working.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to have their voice heard and to be an active part of decisions that affect their employment.

When workplaces value self-advocacy, they help create environments where people with disabilities can contribute, grow and pursue their goals.

Ableism is discrimination, prejudice or barriers that disadvantage people with disabilities.

It can be intentional, but it can also show up in everyday attitudes, assumptions, language and environments.

Ableism might look like assuming what someone can or cannot do because of their disability, speaking to a support person instead of directly to the individual, or failing to consider accessibility when planning an event or creating a space.

Recognizing ableism is an important step toward addressing it. By listening to people with disabilities, challenging assumptions and prioritizing accessibility and inclusion, we can help build communities where everyone has opportunities to participate and belong.

Disability etiquette starts with respect.

Creating a more inclusive community doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, thoughtful actions can make a meaningful difference:
• Speak directly to the person, not only to a caregiver or support person.
• Ask before offering help instead of assuming it’s needed.
• Respect mobility devices and other personal equipment as part of someone’s personal space.
• Be patient and allow people the time they need to communicate.
• Avoid making assumptions about what someone can or cannot do.
• When you’re unsure, it’s okay to respectfully ask.

Inclusion begins with treating every person with dignity, respect and the opportunity to speak for themselves.

A workplace accommodation is a change or adjustment that can help an employee with a disability perform their job and have equal access to opportunities in the workplace.

Accommodations can look different for everyone. They might include flexible scheduling, modified equipment, accessible technology, changes to a workspace, additional training or other individualized supports.

Creating an inclusive workplace starts with recognizing that employees may need different tools and supports to succeed. When barriers are removed, more people have the opportunity to contribute their skills and talents.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

This month, we celebrate people with Down syndrome, their talents, accomplishments, contributions and the many ways they make a difference in their communities.
Awareness matters, but inclusion goes even further. Let’s continue creating communities where people with Down syndrome are welcomed, supported, included and empowered to live the lives they choose.

When workplaces welcome people with developmental disabilities, they gain new perspectives, talents, experiences, and ideas. Inclusive employment also helps build stronger teams and creates workplaces that better reflect the communities they serve.

We believe everyone deserves opportunities to contribute, grow, and pursue their goals. Creating accessible and inclusive workplaces helps make that possible.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)!

At Developmental Disability Advocates, we believe people with developmental disabilities should have opportunities to live a life of their choosing and be fully included in their communities—and meaningful employment can be an important part of that vision.

Throughout Jefferson County, we’re proud to invest in services and build connections that help people with developmental disabilities pursue their goals, increase their independence, and participate in their communities.

This month, we celebrate the talents, skills, and contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce while continuing to advocate for inclusive workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Preparing ahead of time can help you feel more confident going into an IEP or support planning meeting.

Before the meeting, review current plans and documents, write down questions or concerns, think about what is working well, and identify goals or supports you want to discuss. Bringing notes can also help you remember the topics that are most important to you.

Accessibility benefits everyone.
Clear communication, easy-to-navigate spaces, captions, plain language, and flexible ways to access information can support people with disabilities while also making everyday experiences easier for the broader community.

We believe accessibility is an important part of creating communities where people with developmental disabilities can participate, connect, and make informed choices.
