Today's "Look Back" photo is taking us back to the '90s!

In this photo, our team is showing off their new evidence van at the Kenton County Courthouse in Covington. That van, just like the van we have now, was purchased with drug forfeiture money.

Our evidence vans have been an important resource for our team over the years, carrying the tools officers need to collect and preserve evidence at a scene.

The van may have changed over the years, but its role in supporting our officers remains the same.

Please join us in welcoming Officer Aaron Mears to our team!

Officer Mears will serve as the School Resource Officer for Villa Madonna Academy High School/Junior High. He has 20 years of law enforcement experience, spending his career with the Covington Police Department.

SROs are critical piece of our community. They help create a safe and secure learning environment, building trust between students, staff and law enforcement. Their presence allows for quicker responses to emergencies, while also providing mentorship and education on safety, conflict resolution and responsible decision-making. Car crashes are the leading cause of accidental death for teens in the U.S.

Talking about safe driving habits can help teens make smarter decisions behind the wheel. Take a moment during this Teen Driver Safety Week to review these four reminders:

1. Buckle up. Always wear your seat belt, whether you're driving or riding as a passenger.

2. Never drive under the influence. Drugs and alcohol impair judgment and reaction time, making driving dangerous and illegal.

3. Keep your eyes on the road. Put your phone away, leave the radio alone and give driving your full attention.

4. Limit passengers. More people in the car means more distractions. Keep the focus on getting to your destination safely.

Take time this week to talk with your teen about making safe choices behind the wheel!

October is Crime Prevention Month, and we’re raising awareness about a growing online threat: AI powered s*xtortion scams.

Scammers are using artificial intelligence to create fake explicit images of people, including children, to threaten, exploit and extort victims. As Detective Kyle Wallace explains, “These people now have the tools through AI to make their own child s*x abuse material.”

Detective Wallace encourages parents to have open conversations with their children about the apps they use, the risks of interacting with people online and the importance of protecting their personal information. Most importantly, make sure your children know they can come to you for help if something happens online.

This month's Officer Spotlight is Sergeant Timothy Hogan, who shows the path to law enforcement as a career isn't always linear.

When asked why he chose this career, he shared:
"I left a career in banking and finance to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. This career has given me the opportunity to help others and serve my community on a daily basis. What I love about law enforcement is the camaraderie with the officers I get the privilege to work with, as well as the fast pace and unpredictable environment where no two shifts are the same."

We're sharing another story for our 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 series, where we highlight success stories from our Law Enforcement Navigators. 

Recently, LEN Abigail Fortney supported a young domestic violence survivor through the process of starting over. She assisted through every step, starting with emergency shelter and an Emergency Protective Order. But she knows that the journey to a fresh start doesn't stop there. LEN Fortney continued supporting this client by connecting them with the resources needed on the road to their new life. 

Starting over can feel overwhelming, especially when someone is leaving behind a situation that was not safe. Having a person to guide them on each step can make all the difference.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗘𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼? While sworn officers handle immediate safety concerns, Navigators handle follow-up: connecting individuals with mental health care, treatment options, shelter, food resources, general health care and more.

💗 A Kenton County cruiser goes pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 💗

We're continuing our annual tradition, spearheaded by Officer Thomas Britton, with one of our cruisers once again sporting special pink decals in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
