The rain is our friend!

The Outdoor Ed program at Index Elementary gives students the opportunity to wonder, explore, and discover every week, rain or shine! This month, our students were happy to return to Erinswood Trail to begin their unit studying the ecology of the forest floor.

As temps get cooler and the rains return, we want to thank families for helping their students dress for the weather. We are currently seeking donations of gloves, hats, and hand warmers for our gear library. 🧤❄️

Fall is the time that bears and other animals look for food to prepare for winter… and the Index Bears are no exception!

This month, students have been busy participating in the harvest and processing of locally grown food.

Lower Elementary students wrapped up their study of seasonal changes and sensory observations by pressing apples into c***r.

Upper Elementary students were able to harvest carrots and potatoes they planted in the community garden this past spring. They also learned how to save seeds from this years harvest, for the next growing season.

These opportunities were made possible through the support of community members Katrina (Start-Up Fruit Stand), Scherer Family (C***r Press), Start-Up Roots (seed potatoes and carrot seed), and Josiah Skalsky (volunteer). Thank you!

Last week’s Outdoor Education sensory walk through town!
Students focused on their senses of touch, sight, and hearing to make observations along the banks of the North Fork of the Skykomish River. Seeing the return of the salmon, exploring different textures in the beach, and learning to dress for the weather… class is in session, rain ☔️ or shine ☀️ in the outdoor classroom!

Meet the newest member of our team at Index Elementary: Science Specialist, Reneé Slawson! You can speak with her in-person, along with the rest of our faculty at our upcoming Open House on 9/24. 🏠💚🐻

“I’ve worked with children for over a decade, from preschool through 12th grade, in many different educational settings and roles. Along my journey I've had the opportunity to work in both public and private school environments, including a Montessori school. My experience in Montessori was a particularly meaningful part of my journey as an educator and shaped how I see and support children.

I’m excited to bring that philosophy into my role as a science teacher, working with students both in the classroom and outdoors. I love creating hands-on experiences that encourage students to wonder, ask questions, get creative, and discover science in fun and meaningful ways. Art is also a big part of who I am, and I look forward to bringing creativity and the arts into our science experiences whenever I can.

Outside of school, I love hiking, swimming, gardening, creating art, and exploring the Pacific Northwest with my family. I’ve been part of the local community for over 20 years, and I’m excited to give back to the community I call home.”

Our students aren’t the only bears that have returned to town! ‘Tis the season for our local resident Black Bears to find anything they can to pack on the pounds for winter. Physical sightings and bear sign have been evident in town the week… a reminder to be bear aware and be mindful of attractants. Keep that garbage in until morning pick-up!
