Our department had an awesome time welcoming the kids from Run Wild Run Club for a morning full of fitness, teamwork and fire safety!

We kicked things off with some exercise, friendly competition and plenty of fun. After breaking a sweat, we switched gears to fire safety. The duty crew talked about fire prevention, safety, and gave them a tour of our station and some of the equipment we use to help serve our community.

A huge thank you to Run Wild Run Club for sharing their morning with us. We love opportunities like this to connect with our younger generations, promote healthy lifestyles, and share our passion for the fire service.

Meet a Member Monday!

This week, we're introducing Firefighter Joey Bartoletti. Joey as spent 10 years in the fire service, including his time as a volunteer, with the last 3 years here at the Indian Beach Fire Department.

Originally from Long Island, New York, Joey chose North Carolina feeling that we needed a just a few more Italians... Seriously, after leaving the Marine Corps in 2016, he decided to stick around Eastern North Carolina and hasn't looked back since. The fire service has always been a part of who he is. His father retired from FDNY, and when asked what inspired him to pursue this career a simple "It's in my blood" was his answer.

We are very lucky to have found Bartoletti, or Bart, at our organization. He never stays in the same place for more than five minutes, so we got REALLY lucky to have just found him to tell him we had an opening. He's always moving, always learning, and always "axing" questions. He's the kind of firefighter who raises his hand first during reps, volunteers for the toughest tasks, and doesn't shy away from something just because he hasn't done it before.

What makes Bart such a valuable part of our team isn't just his work ethic, but his attitude. He rarely complains, never hesitates to help, and has a way of making 48 hours feel like 12. Now, that may have something to do with the endless supply of inconvenient pranks he pulls throughout the day, but we've learned to appreciate them. There's a balance between taking the job seriously and not taking yourself too seriously, and Bart understands it well. He brings energy, humor, and a genuine desire to improve each day. More importantly, he's someone you know will have your back when things get difficult, whether that's through words of encouragement, a few heartfelt jokes about your appearance, or by rolling up the sleeves on his 3XL and getting to work right beside you.

We asked Bartoletti a few questions:

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Jiu-jitsu, high calorie running, camping, and I'm a BIG Disney guy, but mostly spending time with my wife and dogs.

What do you enjoy most about the communities we serve?
It's a small community, and you get to know everyone. It makes this job even more rewarding.

What safety advice do you have for our residents?
Don't be scared or embarrassed to call 911. We are here for YOU!

What advice would you give someone wanting to join the fire service?
Get your EMT certificate first. It makes beginning the best job in the world that much easier.

That last part, "best job in the world," says a lot about Joey and the way he approaches each day he's on shift. His enthusiasm for the job is genuine and palpable to the people working around him. Whether it's through his inspiration or his perspiration, heavy on the perspiration, Joey is going to find a way to contribute to the IBFD. He understands that being a good firefighter isn't about having all the answers, rather being eager to learn, willing to ask questions, and show up for the people counting on you.

We're proud to have Firefighter Bartoletti at our organization and appreciate the work ethic, humor, loyalty, and commitment he brings to his crew and our community.

Let's hear it for Long Island Joey!

Meet a Member Monday

This week, we are introducing Engineer Coty Wood.

Originally from Staunton, VA, Wood moved to North Carolina when he was eight years old. He has spent the last five years serving with the Indian Beach Fire Department. Coty has always wished he were a little more musically inclined. Fortunately for us, his talents landed somewhere much more useful around a firehouse. He brings a wealth of mechanical knowledge, resourcefulness, and a willingness to work hard and get his hands dirty whenever something needs attention. If he isn't underneath an apparatus chasing a leak, sanding something to refinish, or finding the perfect playlist to make all those tasks more fun, he's outside judging someone, or their mechanic, based on the sound of their engine as it passes the firehouse.

He really does do that...

As an Engineer at our department with his background, he plays an important role behind the scenes with ensuring our apparatus are operational. He's never short of ideas for things we could do to improve our apparatus' speed or efficiency, but to his credit, he also saves the department a considerable amount of money through the repairs, maintenance, and other work he takes on himself. It's a balance we've learned to appreciate about him.

We asked Engineer Wood a few questions:

What topics are you most passionate about in the fire service?
RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) operations and forcible entry. Both require a strong understanding of your tools and decision making skills.

What do you enjoy doing outside of the firehouse?
Spending time with my wife and family.

What do you enjoy most about the communities we serve?
I really enjoy the coastal lifestyle, the support we get, and the unique problems that our landscape allows us to solve for people.

What's the best safety advice you have for our visitors, or something you'd like them to know about our department?
We are prepared to do what it takes and go the extra mile for you, for any reason.

What advice would you give someone interested in joining the fire service?
Be honest and open to learning.

There's no doubt that Engineer Wood positively impacts our fire department with the work he puts in each day. Not all of the daily tasks that our members complete are fun and exciting. Coty is a great example that whether it's training, working through a mechanical problem, or creating an apparatus spreadsheet, some things just have to get done and complaining, or procrastinating, just takes time away from him supercharging his Cadillac.

We are grateful for his willingness to take on these less glamorous responsibilities and for the pride he has in his work that help keep our apparatus reliable and our crews ready to respond.

Thank you Coty for your dedication and continual hard work at the Indian Beach Fire Department!

Meet a Member Monday!

This week, we are highlighting Senior Firefighter Alston Williams, who has spent all four years in the fire service right here at Indian Beach Fire Department.

Interesting fact: they had two Alston Williams' on Noah's Ark, cause this boy is a DAWG.

If anyone you meet says this man doesn't work hard, you have our permission to fire them. Seriously though, Alston is one of the hardest working and compassionate employees at our organization. He's worked construction, other fire service jobs, and currently manages multiple jobs while being a husband and a dad to twin girls! People frequently talk about being "bought in" when discussing culture of an organization. Look at the attached picture if you'd like to see a visual description of this concept. Alston shows up, gets to work and, does what he's supposed to do each and every day. Whether it's conducting training or maintaining equipment, he's going to get it done and bring other people up while doing so.

We asked Senior Firefighter Alston Williams a few questions:

What's your hometown and what brought you here?
Pine Island, Florida.
Family brought me here, and I loved the ocean community. It felt like home.

What are your primary responsibilities and what are you most passionate about?
Driver/operator, ocean rescue operations, truck checks, station cleanliness, apparatus and tool maintenance, working out and training. I am most passionate about RIT training, Rapid Intervention Team. It challenges your skills, work ethic, mental drive, and courage. It is one of the most rewarding feelings to successfully save a fellow fireman in danger.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Boating, fishing, hunting, golf, playing with my twin daughters, and going to concerts with my wife.

What do you like most about the community we serve?
The southern fishing community vibe is a lot like Pine Island where I grew up. and I love aboslutely it.

What is the best safety advice you have for visitors?
If you cannot swim very well, wear a life jacket both adults and children. Also, if you need us for anything, we will come quickly and try to help in any way possible with the utmost compassion.

What advice would you give someone wanting to join the fire service?
Go to your local fire academy and sign up. You will not regret it.

Alston is the kind of firefighter every fire department needs. He understands that a lot of this job isn't glamorous. That a lot of it is checking equipment, cleaning the station, maintaining tools, training when you're tired, or simply handling something just because it needs to be done. Those are the people that this country relies on each and every day. He shows up with a smile on his face, work ethic in his veins, ready for whatever the day has in store for him. I know his family is proud of him, we are proud of him, and we couldn't ask for a better person to call an employee.

Thank you Senior Firefighter Alston Williams for you dedication and service to the Indian Beach Fire Department.
