MVA at 4th and Water Street

On October 7th at approximately 3:27pm members of the Indiana Borough Police Department and Citizens Ambulance Service responded to a crash at the intersection of North 4th Street and Water Street involving an electric bicycle and vehicle.
The electric bicycle was operated by a juvenile male under the age of 16 on the roadway with electric assist activated. The bicycle was being operated in the travel lane of Water Street and attempted to cross 4th Street after stopping at the posted stop sign. Traffic on 4th Street does not stop at Water Street. The bicycle impacted a vehicle traveling south on 4th Street on the driver side front fender/headlight assembly area causing damage to both. Although the bicyclist fell to the ground, no injury was reported. The vehicle operator was not injured. Our investigation remains open.

Statement from Chief Justin Schawl:

This crash did not result in injury and provides an opportunity to remind all parents that children under 16 years of age cannot lawfully operate electric bicycles in Pennsylvania and that any bicyclist operating on the roadway must follow all traffic laws.

Attached to this release is a PA Micromobility Information Sheet all parents can review.

Keeping Our Community Safe This IUP Homecoming & Halloween

The safety and well-being of everyone in our community is our priority. In the coming weeks, you’ll notice an increased police presence throughout town as we focus on keeping Homecoming and Halloween weekends safe and enjoyable for everyone.

We’re here for you — never against you!

Safe celebrations happen when we work together, look out for one another, make good choices, and recognize that dangers DO exist.

As you make your plans, please keep these important reminders in mind:
- Parties advertised on social media can attract uninvited guests.
- You may not know the intentions of strangers or uninvited visitors.
- Not everyone shares our community’s sense of pride and responsibility.
- Not everyone you encounter will have your best interests in mind.
- Arguments can escalate quickly into physical violence.
- Large gatherings can become difficult to control.
- The actions of a few can quickly undermine the good intentions of many.
- Intoxication impairs judgment and decision-making.
- Rooftop gatherings are prohibited and unsafe.
- Loud indoor and large outdoor events can significantly impact our neighbors.
- If you see something suspicious or something doesn’t feel right, REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY.

We’re all safer when we work together.
Celebrate responsibly. Look out for one another. Stay safe.
