πŸš’πŸ”₯ **FIRE PREVENTION NEVER STOPS!** πŸš’πŸ”₯

Our crews are currently (10 AM on 10/16) at St. Bernard Regional Catholic School spending some time with the students talking about fire prevention, fire safety, and all the things they can do to help keep themselves and their families safe!

Today's crew is being led by **Third Assistant Chief Bob Henry**, who is doing his part to educate the next generation of firefighters. Or at least teach them not to put metal in the microwave. Baby steps. πŸ˜‚

🚨 **TOMORROW β€” SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17TH!** 🚨

Come join the **Indiana Fire Association** and other local first responders for a **Safety Day at Lowe's Home Improvement in White Township from 10AM till 2 PM!**

It's a great opportunity to meet the people who serve your community, learn about safety, and get an up-close look at some of the equipment we use.

Bring the kids, bring the family, and come say hello! We promise we're much friendlier when we're not showing up at your house at 3 AM. πŸ˜ŽπŸš’

πŸš’ **Call #659 | October 13 | 5:54 PM**\
πŸš—πŸš™πŸš— **When One Rear-End Turns Into a Group Project**

IFA was dispatched Tuesday evening to South Ben Franklin Road in White Township for a three-vehicle, chain-reaction rear-end collision.

First Assistant Ron Moreau arrived and confirmed that everyone was out of the vehicles and, thankfully, **no injuries were reported.**

Crews handled traffic control and cleaned up fluids while waiting for Pennsylvania State Police and Don Huey Towing to remove the most heavily damaged vehicle. The other two vehicles were able to drive away from the scene. IFA remained on scene for approximately 40 minutes.

Apparently, one vehicle's bad afternoon wasn't enough, so two more decided to join the conversation. Unfortunately, this wasn't the kind of group activity anyone had planned for their Tuesday evening. 😬

Jokes aside, we're glad everyone walked away uninjured. Vehicle damage is frustrating, insurance paperwork is nobody's idea of a good time, and nobody wants to spend their evening waiting for a tow truck. We hope everyone involved gets things sorted out and back to normal soon.

**Friendly reminder:** Leave enough room between you and the vehicle ahead. Your bumper was not designed to be a group-project participant!

πŸš’ **Call #658 | Tuesday, October 13 | 5:08 AM**\
πŸ”₯ **Smoke Detectors: 1. Fire: 0. Homeowner: 1.**

Most people aren't thrilled when their alarm goes off at 5:08 in the morning. This homeowner had a much better reason than most to be thankful it did.

IFA was dispatched along with mutual aid partners from Elderton, Aultman, and Coal Run for a reported residential structure fire. Second Assistant Chief John Steigert arrived to find nothing showing from the outside.

After speaking with the homeowner, Steigert learned that they were getting ready for work when the smoke alarms sounded. They went to investigate and opened the utility room door to find black smoke coming from inside.

Here's where the homeowner deserves a serious **ATTABOY!** πŸ‘ They grabbed a dry chemical fire extinguisher and put the fire out. The fire involved wiring at the well pressure switch, which had a chlorine pump plugged into it. The well breaker had tripped, and the fire was extinguished.

With the fire out and no extension showing, Steigert canceled the incoming mutual aid companies and kept the alarm to IFA. Our crew remained to help ventilate the basement and the rest of the house.

Now, we're not usually in the business of handing out report cards to homeowners, but this one earned a pretty good grade. The smoke alarms did their job, the homeowner recognized something was wrong, grabbed the right equipment, and knocked down a fire before it could become a much bigger problem.

**That's how you turn a potentially terrible morning into a story about what went right.**

A little luck certainly helped, especially with the homeowner being home when it happened. But luck wasn't working alone here. Working smoke alarms and a properly used fire extinguisher made a real difference and likely saved a significant amount of property damage.

We wish the homeowner the best with cleanup and repairs. And if you're reading this thinking you should probably check your smoke detectors or make sure you have a working fire extinguisher handy, consider this your friendly reminder from the people who get called when those things matter most. πŸš’

πŸš’ **Call #655 | Monday, October 12 | 10:24 AM**\
πŸš— **Monday Was Already Bad Enough…**

IFA was dispatched to McGregor Street in White Township for a single-vehicle accident. Crews arrived to find a vehicle that had collided with a telephone pole.

Some people start their Monday with a bad cup of coffee. Some get stuck in traffic. This driver apparently decided to skip straight to the insurance paperwork. 😬

Thankfully, the driver was uninjured, which is what matters most. The collision broke a guy wire, but crews found no other downed wires or concerns with the pole. Pennsylvania State Police arrived, and IFA cleared the scene about 40 minutes after arrival.

We genuinely feel for the driver. Nobody deserves to start the week with a damaged vehicle and an unexpected conversation with their insurance company. We're just glad they walked away without injuries.

**Hopefully the rest of their week improves, because Monday has already taken enough out of their budget.** πŸš’

πŸš’ **Call #653 | Sunday, October 11 | 11:38 AM**\
πŸ”₯ **FIRE – OTHER: Because Apparently, β€œSmoking Outlet at Ollie’s” Isn’t a dispatch call type**

Every fire department has its bread and butter calls. Fires, crashes, alarms, rescues. And then there's the magical dispatch category known as **FIRE – OTHER**.

Dispatch only has so many buttons to push, and sometimes the real world refuses to cooperate with the available menu options. So we get *Fire – Other.*

Over the years, this prestigious category has covered everything from commercial fire alarms and airplanes in distress to fuel spills and pedestrian assistance. And on Sunday morning, it brought us to Ollie's Bargain Outlet for a smoking electrical outlet on the side of the building.

"Fire-Other is like a box of chocolates, we never know what we are going to get"

Crews arrived, confirmed the outlet was indeed smoking (which, for the record, is generally not a feature you want in an electrical outlet), located the breaker, and isolated the outlet until repairs could be made.

No flames. No dramatic rescues. No need to deploy the million-dollar equipment for a Hollywood-style entrance. Just firefighters tracking down a breaker and making sure a small electrical problem didn't get a chance to audition for a much bigger one.

**That's the thing about being a firefighter.** You can spend hours training for major emergencies, but you also need to know what to do when an outlet decides it's had enough of being an outlet.

And that's why we answer the call. Whether it's a structure fire, an accident, or an electrical outlet having a full-blown identity crisis, we'll figure out what needs done.

As for the dispatch category? Well, there's always **FIRE – OTHER.** πŸ˜‚πŸš’

πŸš’ **IUP HOMECOMING WEEKEND: GOOD TIMES, GOOD PEOPLE, AND NO EXTRA DRAMA!** πŸˆπŸŽ‰

IUP Homecoming kicked off Friday, October 9th, with the parade and football game following on Saturday. As in years past, IFA teamed up with our first-due mutual aid partners to staff Central Station for the weekend. It’s a chance to enjoy some fellowship without an emergency involved, while making sure we're ready to respond when a few thousand extra people show up in Indiana and White Township.

And Indiana, you did pretty well! πŸ‘ We had **no IUP-related calls over the weekend.** Kudos to everyone who came out to celebrate and did it responsibly. That's a win for everybody!

We did handle a child locked in a vehicle Friday evening at 6:28 PM and a fuel spill Saturday at 8:16 PM, but otherwise, nothing extra due to Homecoming.

A HUGE thank-you to **Creekside Volunteer Fire Company** for joining us both nights for standby coverage. We also want to thank all our members who helped make the weekend run smoothly.

And then there's **Summit Church**. ❀️ Once again, they provided an outstanding meal for first responders at Mack Park. Getting to head over to Mack Park, sit down, enjoy some great food, and spend time with our fellow responders is one of the highlights of the weekend. Summit doesn't just feed us β€” they spoil us, and we're certainly not complaining! Thank you for continuing to take care of those who take care of the community.

On Saturday, IFA also participated in the Homecoming Parade while keeping an engine on standby along South 7th Street. Creekside had an engine positioned on North 9th Street to help ensure coverage while the crowds enjoyed the festivities.

The parade had a great turnout, the community showed up, and everyone got to enjoy a great Homecoming weekend.

**Well done, Indiana!** Thanks to our members, Creekside, Summit Church, and everyone who helped make another Homecoming weekend a success. πŸš’πŸˆ

πŸŽƒπŸš’ **THE HALLOWEEN PARADE IS BACK IN DOWNTOWN INDIANA!** πŸ‘»πŸ¬

The Indiana Fire Association, Kiwanis Club of Indiana and Indiana Downtown are teaming up to bring a Halloween parade back to Indiana Borough, and we want to make this first year HUGE for the kids!

πŸ“… **SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24TH**

πŸ“ **Meet at the Indiana Fire Association – 501 Philadelphia Street**

πŸ•— **8:45–9:20 AM:** Gather at the fire station and get ready to march!\
🎺 **9:20 AM:** Parade lineup\
πŸ‘» **9:30 AM:** PARADE STEPS OFF!

We’ll march west on Philadelphia Street toward North 8th Street, with the IASD Junior High Marching Band joining the fun!

🚨 **AND HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART: EVERYONE IS INVITED!**

You do NOT have to live in Indiana Borough. You do NOT have to live in Indiana County. You don't even have to know where Indiana is without using GPS. πŸ˜‚

**If you're reading this, you're invited!** Bring your kids, your grandkids, your neighbors, your friends, and anyone else who enjoys Halloween, candy, and watching children consume enough sugar to concern their parents.

πŸŽƒ **COSTUME SUGGESTION FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT:**

We are especially supportive of anyone showing up dressed as a firefighter. In fact, those little firefighters might receive some *very special treatment* from the real firefighters at the station. πŸ˜‰πŸš’

We're not making any promises, but we know a few firefighters who are easily bribed with a good costume and a little enthusiasm. (Actual fire trucks are not included in the costume package.)

🍬 **10 AM–12 PM: DOWNTOWN BUSINESS TRICK-OR-TREAT!**

After the parade, head to more than **60 participating downtown businesses** for candy and Halloween treats! The Kiwanis Club of Indiana, PA, will also provide treat bags for participating children. Pick up the list of participating businesses at IRMC Park.

🧑 **DID WE MENTION IT'S ALL FREE?**

βœ… Free parade\
βœ… Free downtown trick-or-treating\
βœ… Free candy and treats for kids in costume\
βœ… Free fun for the entire family

This is the first year we're bringing the parade back in this format, and we want to see downtown packed with kids, families, creative costumes, and enough tiny firefighters to make us wonder if we accidentally scheduled a recruitment event.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please use marked crosswalks, obey pedestrian signals, and watch for traffic. Philadelphia Street will reopen to vehicles immediately following the parade.

πŸŽƒ **SO, SHARE THIS POST, SPREAD THE WORD, AND BRING THE KIDS!**

Whether you're from Indiana, a neighboring town, the other side of the county, or somewhere that requires a road trip and a full tank of gas, come join us!

Let's make this a Halloween tradition the kids will look forward to every year. And if your little one shows up in a firefighter costume, don't be surprised if they get a little extra attention at the station. We have a reputation to maintain. πŸš’πŸ˜‚

**SEE YOU SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24TH!**

Yes this is a generated photo. It is our first year, we will have good photos for next year. We needed something to get your attention.

πŸš’ **Back to School, Back to Fire Prevention!** 🧯

On October 8th, Third Assistant Chief Bob Henry and the crew visited Ben Franklin Elementary to talk fire safety with students in kindergarten through third grade.

Great kids, great questions, and hopefully a few future firefighters in the making! πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ We appreciate the opportunity to spend time with these students and help them learn some important lessons about staying safe.

A big thank-you to Bob and the crew for taking the time to get out into our schools and represent IFA. Teaching fire prevention today might make all the difference tomorrow!

πŸš’ **Call #644 | October 7 | 2:59 PM**

Some days, your vehicle makes it home. Other days, it gets introduced to another vehicle a little more aggressively than anyone planned.

IFA was dispatched to Oakland Avenue near Nehrig Drive for a two-vehicle accident. First Assistant Ron Moreau arrived to find a T-bone-style collision. Crews cleaned up the debris and remained on scene until Pennsylvania State Police and Sabo Towing arrived.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the vehicles, which had a considerably worse afternoon than their owners had planned.

We hope everyone involved is doing well. The vehicles might be having a rough week, but at least everyone went home. πŸš’

πŸš’ **A little fire safety goes a long way!** 🧯

On October 7th, Third Assistant Chief Bob Henry, Company 2 Lieutenant Codey Venanzio, and Firefighter Baylee Summerhill visited East Pike Elementary to share some important fire prevention tips with the kids.

A big thank-you to these three for taking the time to get out into the community, teach the next generation about fire safety, and help make sure the kids know what to do before an emergency happens!

We appreciate you representing IFA and investing your time in keeping our community safe! πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’
