IUP Institute for Rural Health and Safety Bringing together university personnel from various disciplines and backgrounds
Education & safety

The IUP Institute for Rural Health & Safety began in the early 1980s. The mission is to bring together university personnel from various disciplines and professional backgrounds to assist transportation organizations in solving problems related to traffic safety, while maintaining the values of good transportation. Applying university resources toward traffic improvement, the IUP Highway Safety Center is a liaison between university personnel and state and local officials; business, industrial, and professional interests; and other groups and individuals. The Center's program encompasses activity in five major areas:
• Research, surveys, and studies;
• Education (teaching);
• Training and conferences;
• Field and extension services; and
• Traffic safety communications and information exchange

Within these areas, the Highway Safety Center offers the following:
• Increase awareness of traffic safety issues in the counties of Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson;
• First-responder, emergency medical technician, paramedic, and CPR training;
• Driver improvement programs for police officers, ambulance personnel, and the public;
• Undergraduate and graduate courses in driver education;
• Industrial fire brigade and emergency response team training; and
• Driver improvement programs for private fleets.

🚌 It’s National School Bus Safety Week (October 19–23, 2026)!
Every day, millions of students rely on school buses to get to and from school safely. This week is a critical reminder for students, parents, and motorists to practice safe driving habits around school zones and bus stops.
Here’s a little school bus refresher:
🟡 Yellow means slow.
🛑 Red means stop.
Let’s protect kids getting on and off the school bus! Always stop when the stop-arm is out.

Don't let an accident "steal" your fun! 🎃✨ Be Safe, Be Seen on Halloween!
Last night, the Safe Children's Network Children's Advisory Commission of Indiana County participated in the Armstrong-Indiana-Clarion Drug and Alcohol Commission Trick or Treat in the Park at Mack Park Pavilion. We had a blast handing out glow sticks and glow-in-the-dark stickers while reminding everyone about the importance of pedestrian safety on Halloween night.
Let's keep the spooky season fun and safe for all our little monsters! 🕸️👻

As the days get shorter, visibility drops, making nighttime walking a serious hazard. Whether you're heading home from work, walking the dog, or getting some evening exercise, your safety is the top priority.
Remember these quick, life-saving tips before you step out after sunset:
✨ Be Highly Visible: Ditch the dark hoodies. Wear bright colors or retro-reflective clothing so drivers can spot you from a distance.
🔦 Carry a Light: Always use a flashlight or your phone’s flashlight feature to light your path and alert oncoming vehicles.
🚦 Stick to the Rules: Cross strictly at designated crosswalks or well-lit intersections. If there's no sidewalk, always walk on the shoulder facing oncoming traffic so you can see what’s approaching.
📵 Heads Up, Phones Down: Keep distractions in your pocket and remove headphones. You need both your eyes and ears completely alert to stay aware of your surroundings.
BE BRIGHT, STAY SAFE TONIGHT! 🚶

What a difference 24 hours can make! ☀️➡️🌧️
Weather can flip in an instant, which is why it is the perfect time for an important safety reminder: if your wipers are on, your headlights must be on too.
In many states, this isn't just a smart driving tip—it's the law.
Daytime running lights often don't turn on your rear lights, so make sure to manually switch your full headlights on. Stay safe, slow down, and drive carefully out there today! ☔🚘

This Pedestrian Safety Month, let’s keep our littlest pedestrians safe. When you see a school bus with flashing red lights and its stop arm out, you MUST come to a complete stop.
🟡 Flashing Yellow: Slow down, the bus is preparing to stop.
🔴 Flashing Red + Stop Arm: Stop completely. Children are getting on or off.
📵 Stay Alert: Put the phone away and watch for kids near roads.
Drive like your own children are at that stop. Let’s protect our neighborhood kids together. 🚶🚌 ❤️
