The Exodus story is about a God who rescues their people from catastrophe. The Israelites are backed into a corner. Moses is at the end of himself. Having fallen to the bottom, they encounter the God who will pull them up and save them from their enemies.

And the same is often true for us today. The legendary Black pastor Howard Thurman once said that God’s people always find themselves with their backs against the wall; yet it is there that we always discover God is ready to rescue and save.

Who is the God we meet at the bottom when our backs are against the wall?

He is the holy God who joins his people in their affliction to redeem them and make his faithfulness known to the world.

This week we are praying for Mt. Vernon Community Missionary Baptist Church and Indianapolis Met in Haughville.

Holy God, we ask your presence to fill the congregation of Mt. Vernon CMBC with your presence this week as they go about their scattered lives in our community. Please use the faithfulness of our brothers and sisters to promote peace, joy, and unity in Haughville and our city. We pray that you would strengthen the ministry of this beautiful church, that they might proclaim your gospel and meet the needs of our community for many, many more years to come.

We thank you also for the presence of Indy Met High School in our community. As students begin their summer break, please protect them, and keep them safe from temptations and violence that haunt our youth. Please grant rest to the teachers and administrators, even as they begin making plans for the next school year. Use Indy Met as an institution to help our youth overcome obstacles and barriers set against them.

School’s out, so we’re back outside! We have two opportunities for some safe summer fun here in Haughville.

Meet us this Saturday at 5:30pm for BLESS THE BLOCK at Belmont Beach. We’ll have live music, free food from Don Nico’s, free snow cones, and good vibes on the river!

Then meet us again on June 6th for our first summer pop-up event at Haughville Park from 11am to 1pm! Live music, free food and snow cones, and some kickball!

When we encounter the great prophet Moses in Exodus, his ministry is not off to a great start. In just a few verses, God’s chosen liberator moves from strong convictions, to deep insecurities, until finally he gives up and runs away. Before Moses even begins his great purpose, we’re left wondering if he is going to make it at all.

This week we’re praying for Dunamis Church and Che Chori in Haughville.

We thank you, Holy Spirit, for your mighty work at Dunamis Church. Thank you for making a place where our Latino neighbors can gather safely to worship you. We ask that you continue strengthening the work of this church as they proclaim new life and display the light of Christ in our community.

Creative God, we thank you for your generosity in locating Che Chori here in Haughville! Bless the work of those who labor, making incredible empanadas and sausages for our community to enjoy. As they open up indoor seating, please use this as a safe space for us to gather, where neighbors can become friends and our community will become strengthened.
