The Office of Land Stewardship is offering five volunteer tree-planting opportunities this fall to help restore forest health and increase urban tree canopy throughout Indianapolis parks.

A healthy urban canopy provides important ecological benefits, and planting trees is one way we can strengthen and restore these natural areas for the future.

We’ll be planting at Municipal Gardens, Spades Park, Christian Park, Washington Park, and Dubarry Park.

The Invasive Species Strike Team at Eagle Creek Park tackled bush honeysuckle, oriental bittersweet, burning bush, and multiflora rose this Saturday. We worked along the woods edge near the 71st St entrance removing woody invasives, which were crowding out native species. We uncovered a grove of pawpaw trees and dogwoods. A few of our favorite photos from this week from Eagle Creek Park - Indy Parks and Recreation. In first place was this striking yellow garden orb-weaver spider we found just before entering the woods behind him. We also paid a visit to some very large pin oak trees residing in a forested wetland just west of Spring Pond Nature Preserve.

Thank you to the hardworking volunteers who came out for Saturday’s W**d Wrangle at Paul Ruster Park! It was a gorgeous day to remove bush honeysuckle and purple wintercreeper. We worked on the north side of the park on the edge of the woods where invasives were starting to move in.

We also took a break to check out some awesome pollinators…🦋🐝

🌿🌧️ Thank you to the Krieg DeVault volunteers yesterday who helped remove invasives at Eagle Creek Park - Indy Parks and Recreation! The weather may have cut the workday short, but their team made quite the dent in the honeysuckle and oriental bittersweet wall towards the south end of Lilly Lake.
