day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution creating the Continental Navy.

Indiana has played a vital role in the restoration of the USS Constitution, one of the oldest ships in the Navy's fleet. White oak trees grown in Constitution Grove, located in Crane, Indiana, are used to repair "Old Ironsides." The Indiana War Memorial Museum contains a model of this famous ship.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is open on Fridays from 10-4. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for children and seniors. Veterans are free!

On Friday, Indiana War Memorial volunteer Pat Spence was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Garden Club of Indianapolis.

You may have seen Pat and her team of volunteers outside, caring for the flowers on the Indiana War Memorial's properties. Most recently, she planted yellow mums outside the Memorial to welcome in the fall season. Thank you, Pat and your team, for adding color and beauty to our spaces! 🌼

Did you know the dentist on the USS Indianapolis was also an artist and bird enthusiast? While aboard the vessel, Earl Henry painted pictures of his beloved birds and kept the crew entertained by imitating bird calls. Several of his prints are on display in the Indiana War Memorial.

Pictured here is one of his most famous works, American Eagle in the Pacific, which was painted on the ship. Notecards with the print are available in the gift shop at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, which is open today from 10-4. Supply is limited, so visit the Indiana War Memorial and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument today and take a piece of history home with you!

Today is ! Did you know that the phrase "cup of Joe" likely comes from Navy slang from the early 1930s?

The museum features its own "cup of Joe", a cup that was used by former governor of Indiana, Joseph Kernan, while he was a Prisoner of War in Vietnam. If you look closely, you can see how he etched his name into the cup using a nail.

Explore more of the surprising intersections between military history and coffee at the Indiana War Memorial and Museum! The museum is open from 9-5, Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is $10 for Adults; $5.00 for children and seniors; Veterans are always free.
