Statement from MCDP: Marion County Democrats Celebrate Historic Primary Turnout
The Marion County Democratic Party is celebrating the results of yesterday’s historic primary election. Unofficial results from the May 5, 2026 primary indicate that Indy Democrats turned out in record numbers, reflecting a county that is ready to push back against the Trump administration's attacks on working families and their livelihoods.
Of the 99,645 ballots cast across Marion County, Democrats accounted for more than 80,000 votes, approximately 80% of all votes cast. That Democratic margin dominates Republican primary turnout by more than 4-to-1. This year’s overall primary turnout of 15.8% marks a new high, surpassing the 13.6% recorded in the 2024 primary and the 10.8% in 2022. More Indianapolis voters are turning out, and they are turning out for Democrats.
"Last night is proof that Marion County Democrats are fired up and ready to fight," said Myla A. Eldridge, Chair of the Marion County Democratic Party. "The frustration Democrats feel right now is real and voters showed that yesterday. We are going to channel that frustration into organizing and turning out Indy Democrats in full force this November."
Chair Eldridge extends her sincere thanks to every candidate who stepped up to run on the Democratic ballot this primary season. "Running for office takes courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief that what we do together matters," Eldridge said. "Every single one of you made our Party stronger, and we are grateful for your willingness to serve our communities."
Chair Eldridge also congratulates all of the primary winners on a successful election. "The Marion County Democratic Party is excited to stand fully behind you, and we will work together to ensure your success continues into the general election. We are excited to support candidates like:
- Congressman Andre Carson for Congressional District 7
- Cinde Wirth for U.S. Congress District 6
- Kristina Moorhead for Indiana State Senate District 29
- Kerry Forestal for Senate District 31
- Allissa Impink for Senate District 46
- Rep. Cherrish Pryor for House District 94
- Rep. John L Bartlett for House District 95
- Rep. Justin Moed for House District 97
- Clerk Kate Sweeney Bell for Marion County Clerk
- Kelvis Williams for Marion County Sheriff"
With the primary behind us, MCDP leaders say the work is just beginning. The Party plans to build on yesterday's momentum through robust organizing efforts across Indianapolis, with the goal of delivering another strong Democratic performance in November.
Marion County has long been a stronghold for Democratic values, and the Marion County Democratic Party intends to keep it that way.
