Indiana Humanities Think. Read. Talk.

Before we watch a film about one of America's most beloved poets of the natural world, we're going outside. 🌳

On Sunday, November 8, join us for MARY OLIVER: SAVED BY THE BEAUTY OF THE WORLD, a beautiful new documentary celebrating the life and work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet.

And because Mary Oliver believed so deeply in the power of paying attention to the world around us, we're making an afternoon of it!

In partnership with Indiana Humanities and Noblesville Parks Foundation , we'll begin with a guided walk through Forest Park, featuring poetry, nature, and a little local history as we celebrate the park's 100th anniversary. Then we'll gather at Logan Street Theater to experience the film together.

One of our favorite things about this event? It all started with a community member suggesting the film! It's exactly the kind of collaboration we love — neighbors and local organizations coming together to create something more than just a movie.

📅 Sunday, November 8
🌳 2 PM — Optional Forest Park walk
🎬 3:30 PM — Film screening at Logan Street Theater
🎟️ $12 admission — Walk included!

Watch the trailer, invite a friend, and join us for an afternoon celebrating poetry, nature, and the beauty of the world right here in our own neighborhood.

With America's 250th in the rearview mirror, Indiana Humanities is looking to continue to engage Indiana residents in conversations about American history, civics, and democracy as we look forward to the next 250.

Our Civics & Democracy Speakers Bureau offers an opportunity to kick off conversations in your community about America's founding principles and how Americans play a role in government.

It's Humanities Councils Week.

From Oct. 19–23, we’re teaming up with the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Mellon Foundation to celebrate how Humanities Councils bring people together.

As one of 56 state and jurisdictional councils in the U.S., Indiana Humanities helps make space for people to gather around art, humanities, and culture — right in our own community.

From programs like Voices and Votes to Poetry Out Loud to Proof, in-person experiences invite us to learn, share, and discover something new together.

Follow along throughout the week as we share how Councils make connection possible.

Thank you!

We deeply appreciate each and every person who braved the rain and came out to our Open House yesterday. We had so many enlightening conversations and learned a lot about how we can expand our outreach under the leadership of our new president and CEO, Shelley Hunter.

Couldn't make it? Drop us a note below about how we can better serve your community.

It highlights their pivotal roles in establishing libraries, promoting literacy, and advocating for equal access to information within their communities.

What’s your experience with unexplained species? Which cryptids were said to creep among the shadows in your hometown?

We're back with our second annual spooky lecture, and this time we're talking about local creature myths.

Join us at Indiana Humanities for a monstrously good time on Monday, Oct. 26. As part of the festivities, Dr. Robert Dobler, senior lecturer in the folklore and ethnomusicology department at Indiana University Bloomington, will share a short presentation about the monsters that are rumored to tread on Indiana soil.

This event is lovingly named for the bestselling novel, "House of a Thousand Candles," by Meredith Nicholson, who haunted — err, lived — at our current home at 1500 N Delaware St.

The evening will include light refreshments and an intimate house tour with Nicholson himself, who promises to make a ghostly return for the special occasion.

As America’s 250th anniversary celebrations continue throughout 2026, the Indianapolis Men's Chorus (IMC) is turning the spotlight toward home.

On Oct. 29, the chorus presents "American Voices, Indiana Stories," an evening of music, storytelling, and history exploring the remarkable Hoosiers whose creativity, resilience, service, and innovation have helped shape our nation.

Presented by Crossroad, the chorus’s new chamber ensemble, the concert brings Indiana stories to life through music and historical reflection, connecting our state’s past with the larger American story. The program is curated by the IMC’s Joseph Perkins Jr., with historical research and interpretation by Dr. Nicholas Johnson, associate professor of musicology at Butler University.

This program received support from an Indiana Humanities Mini-Grant.
