SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH!

This September, we’re joining communities across the country to recognize National Preparedness Month with this year’s theme: AMERICANS STAND READY.

Being prepared isn’t just about what happens during a disaster. It’s about taking simple steps before an emergency happens to protect yourself, your family, and your community.

Throughout September, Warren County EMA will focus on three important ways you can stand ready:

📋 MAKE A PLAN
Know what you and your family will do before an emergency happens. Talk about emergency contacts, evacuation routes, meeting places, and how you’ll stay connected.

🎒 BUILD A KIT
Have the supplies you may need ready to go. A preparedness kit can help you and your family be more self-reliant when you need it most.

📱 BE IN THE KNOW
Stay informed about the hazards that could affect our community and know where to get trusted emergency information and alerts.

Preparedness starts with you — and every small step makes a difference.

Americans Stand Ready.
Are you ready?

Follow Warren County EMA throughout September as we share tips, resources, and simple ways you can Make a Plan, Build a Kit, and Be in the Know.

☀️ HOT WEATHER IS RETURNING! ☀️

As temperatures rise, we encourage everyone to take steps to stay cool and safe:

💧 Drink plenty of water
❄️ Spend time in air-conditioned spaces
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
🌡️ Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day
🐾 Make sure pets have shade and plenty of water—and never leave them in a parked car
❤️ Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults and young children.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Look out for one another. We’re all in this together!

🎒🏫 First Day of School is Here!

As students head back to school, let’s all do our part to help keep them safe.

🚸 Drivers: Slow down in school zones, watch for pedestrians and buses, and never pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights.

🚌 Students: Use crosswalks, stay alert around traffic, and follow school safety instructions.

👨‍👩‍👧 Parents & caregivers: Review drop-off/pick-up procedures, emergency plans, and how your child can contact you if needed.

A safe school year starts with all of us. Let’s make safety a priority from day one!

📚 Wishing all Warren County students, families, teachers, and staff a safe and successful school year!

🚨 Emergency Management Is More Than Disasters

When you hear “Emergency Management,” you might think of tornadoes, floods, or other disasters. But emergency management is much more than responding when something goes wrong.

Emergency managers work before, during, and after emergencies:

🔹 Preparedness – Planning, training, exercises, education, and making sure resources are ready.

🔹 Mitigation – Identifying hazards and taking steps to reduce their impact and future damage.

🔹 Response – Coordinating information, resources, and agencies when an emergency happens.

🔹 Recovery – Helping the community assess damage, restore services, address needs, and move forward.

💡 Emergency management is about being ready before the emergency happens—not just reacting when it does.
📊 WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

A severe storm is expected to move through the area tonight. You have a few hours to prepare.

🏠 B: Review where you would take shelter
🔋 C: Charge phones and gather emergency supplies
📱 D: Check on family, friends, or neighbors

And remember: There isn't just one right answer—being prepared often means doing all of these things before severe weather arrives.
