⚠️ SCAM ALERT ⚠️
We’ve seen an increase in these calls here at Warren County Communications. Please take a moment to read and share!
Over the past several weeks, there has been an increase in the number of calls to Warren County Communications of scams involving missed jury duty. While this type of scam is not new, it appears to be making its way around again, and we want to remind everyone to use caution.
In these scams, individuals may claim to be a law enforcement officer, deputy sheriff, court official, or other government representative. The caller may tell you that you failed to appear for jury duty and now have an active arrest warrant. They may then demand immediate payment to clear the warrant, post bond, or avoid being arrested or sent to jail.
Do not fall for it.
Unfortunately, advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technology have made scams increasingly convincing. Scammers may be able to imitate the voice of someone you know or manipulate caller ID information to make it appear as though the call is coming from a local law enforcement agency, courthouse, or familiar phone number.
REMEMBER: Law enforcement and court officials will NEVER demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest, clear an arrest warrant, post bond, or prevent you from going to jail.
If you receive a suspicious call:
• Hang up. Do not provide personal, identifying, or financial information.
• Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or any other form of payment.
• Do not assume the caller is legitimate simply because the phone number appears local or familiar.
• If you are concerned the call may be legitimate, independently contact your local law enforcement agency or courthouse using a phone number you know to be valid.
Scammers often create a sense of urgency and may threaten immediate arrest or other consequences in an attempt to pressure you into acting before you have time to think or verify their claims. In some cases, scammers may also attempt to record your voice for use in other fraudulent activity.
STOP. HANG UP. VERIFY.
If you did not initiate the contact and someone unexpectedly demands money or personal information, take the time to independently verify who you are dealing with before taking any action.
Please share this information with your friends, family, and neighbors - particularly those who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams.
