🧡 Our hearts are with the Eaton County Road Commission.

Today, we join the road commission community in mourning the tragic loss of a road worker who was killed while working in an active work zone.

Every day, road workers across Michigan step out of their trucks and equipment to build, repair, and maintain the roads we all depend on. They work just feet away from moving traffic and trust drivers to slow down, stay alert, and follow traffic control.

Behind every hard hat and safety vest is someone’s family member, friend, and coworker who deserves to make it home safely at the end of the day.

The Ionia County Road Department extends our deepest condolences to the worker’s family, friends, and everyone at the Eaton County Road Commission during this incredibly difficult time.

As you travel through work zones, please remember:

⚠️ Slow down and give crews room to work.
📵 Put the phone down and eliminate distractions.
🚧 Obey signs, flaggers, and traffic control devices.
👷 Stay alert and expect workers and equipment to be nearby.

A few seconds of patience can make the difference between someone making it home or not.

🚧 We’re Hiring! 🚧

The Ionia County Road Department is accepting applications for a full-time Transportation Maintenance Worker.

This union position performs a variety of road maintenance activities, including heavy equipment operation and manual labor.

Qualifications include:

Michigan Unrestricted Class A CDL with air brakes
Current medical certification card
“N” tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain one
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
Availability to work overtime and be on call during nights, weekends, and holidays
Heavy equipment experience is helpful

Starting wage: $29.12 per hour

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE – NASH HIGHWAY 🚧

Beginning tomorrow morning, Tuesday, September 8, at 7:00 AM, Nash Highway between Peddler Lake Road and M-50 will be CLOSED to through traffic.

Crews will be replacing crossroad culverts along this section of Nash Highway in preparation for road improvements scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.

⚠️ Please follow the posted detour and allow extra travel time. Local residents will still be able to access their homes, but through traffic will need to use the designated detour route.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation while we complete this necessary work and prepare Nash Highway for the upcoming improvements.

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE — WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19 🚧

Fourth Street between East Main Street and M-21 will be closed on Wednesday, August 19, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for hot mastic repairs in preparation for a chip seal later this year.

Hot mastic is used to fill larger cracks and repair deteriorated areas, helping keep water out and prevent further damage. Completing these repairs before chip sealing provides a stronger, smoother surface and helps extend the life of the roadway.

Please use an alternate route and allow extra travel time. Thank you for your patience!
