Forty-five years of lunch tables, dance floors, card games, and "I'm so glad you're here."

Now there's a film about it.

45 Dreams: A Love Letter to Community was made by filmmaker Joshua Booth of Diamond Label Films, who spent months listening to the older adults, volunteers, and staff who make the Senior Center what it is. Here's the trailer: https://youtu.be/uShN6T8VwZE

Join us for the full community screening at FilmScene on Wednesday, December 9. Reception in the lobby at 6:00 p.m., film at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are free: https://icfilmscene.org/film/45-dreams-a-love-letter-to-community/ Donations to the Friends of the Iowa City Senior Center are welcome and never required.

What's one memory of the Senior Center you hope makes it into the film? Tell us in the comments.

Somewhere in your mail pile is an envelope from your Medicare plan called the Annual Notice of Change. Most plans mail it in September, and it spells out next year’s premiums, copays, and coverage.
Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, and that envelope is your starting line. Iowa’s SHIIP counselors give free help comparing plans, and their appointments fill up fast: call 1-800-351-4664 or visit shiip.iowa.gov.

If you like your plan and it is not changing, you do not have to do anything. Medicare also answers around the clock at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Who in your life needs a nudge to open that envelope this week? https://www.medicare.gov/about-us/contact-medicare

For questions about billing, your claims, medical records, or expenses, log into your secure Medicare account, or call us at 1-800-MEDICARE.

Nobody legitimate will ever insist that you pay with a gift card, a wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or a payment app. Not a bank, not a government agency, not a “grandchild in trouble.”

Scammers want you rushed. Three habits slow them down:

Pause. Honest businesses give you time to decide.
Verify. Skip links in unexpected messages. Look up the real phone number yourself and call it.
Tell someone. Describing it to a friend or family member often reveals the scam.

If you spot one, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Want to practice? Ann Thompson, Victim Services Coordinator with the Iowa City Police Department, leads Fighting Against Fraud: Spot the Red Flags Before It’s Too Late. Friday, October 23, 1 to 2 pm, Room 302. Register online or call 319-356-5220.

This morning in Room G07, hands get to do what they do best.

Healing Through Clay is a supportive ceramics workshop for people living with arthritis and other rheumatic conditions. Ceramic artist Perla Camacho Jimenez, who lives with rheumatoid arthritis herself, leads gentle hand-building that supports movement and dexterity, with room to connect with others who understand.

Today, 10 am to noon. No experience or membership needed. Register online or call 319-356-5220. It meets again October 31, November 14, and December 12.

What is something you made with your hands that you are still proud of?

10/15/2026

Pull up a chair. Today at 1 pm, Iowa City Fire Chief Scott Lyon is back in Room 302 for this month’s Fireside Chat.

Chief Lyon shares practical safety tips and timely topics, and you are invited to ask questions and suggest future ones. Fire Prevention Week just wrapped up, so it is a good moment to ask about your own home.

Thursday, October 15, 1 to 2 pm, Room 302. Register online or call 319-356-5220.

What is one safety question you have been meaning to ask the fire department?
