Neighborhood Centers A Safe Space This balance also allows us to facilitate relationships between families and offers the necessary support before a crisis erupts.

Our family-centered and community-based approach provides a long-term commitment to improving the quality of life for families in the neighborhoods we serve. By offering a consistent and stable neighborhood presence, we are able to provide a balanced mixture of programs and activities that build community, teach new skills and provide advocacy and support for families. Each program or service creates a layer that is individually important, but collectively creates a context that allows families to enhance their quality of life and achieve a sustainable level of self-sufficiency and success.

We had a wonderful time bringing families together for an interactive learning experience focused on supporting children’s language development! As part of a capstone project, Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Student Clinician Paulina Garza Rodriguez, a former member of our team, prepared an engaging presentation sharing practical strategies families can use to encourage communication and language skills at home.

Through fun activities with apples and books, families explored simple, meaningful ways to support children’s learning, vocabulary, and language development in everyday life.
We’re grateful to the families who joined us, to our Family Support team member Laura for helping bring the event together, and to Paulina for coming back to share her knowledge with our families!

Many in our community have asked how they can honor Ahmed’s memory. With his family’s support, we created the Ahmed Osman Memorial Fund to support a memorial bench at Pheasant Ridge and a scholarship in his name.

Ahmed grew up in Neighborhood Centers programs and holds a special place in the hearts of so many.

Language is what connects us all.

We had a wonderful time bringing families, teachers, support staff, and University of Iowa students together to celebrate the many languages in our community. Through fun activities, a shared meal and dialogue, families learned strategies to support multi-lingual children's language development. Thank you to the Clinical Linguistics and Disparities Lab, Professor Philip Combith and his students, for continuing to partner on linguistic educational events!

Please join us for a vigil in memory of Ahmed tonight, Thursday, September 24, at 6 p.m. We will gather in front of the Pheasant Ridge Neighborhood Center at 2651 Roberts Road in Iowa City.
We will remember Ahmed and support his family and everyone who loved him. All are welcome. Please feel free to share this invitation.
