Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001, and the terrorist attacks on the United States. Four commercial flights were hijacked that day:
American Airlines Flight 11: 92 total (11 crew, 76 passengers, 5 hijackers)
United Airlines Flight 175: 65 total (9 crew, 51 passengers, 5 hijackers)
American Airlines Flight 77: 64 total (6 crew, 53 passengers, 5 hijackers)
United Airlines Flight 93: 44 total (7 crew, 33 passengers, 4 hijackers)
These aircraft were used as weapons against the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Flight 93 was intended for another high-profile target—likely the U.S. Capitol or the White House—before heroic actions by the passengers and crew thwarted the attackers.
Today, we honor the 2,977 innocent victims, support the thousands of families affected, and pay tribute to the 441 first responders and emergency personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice trying to save others. Among those lost were:
343 Firefighters: Members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).
71 Law Enforcement Officers: Including 37 Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) officers, 23 New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers, 5 New York State tax enforcement agents, 3 New York State court officers, 2 FBI agents, and 1 Secret Service agent.
8 Paramedics and EMTs: Private and hospital-based emergency medical personnel.
19 Military Personnel: Service members performing emergency rescue duties inside the Pentagon.
Please take a moment today to reflect, remember all those impacted by this tragedy, and join us in a moment of silence.
We will never forget. 🇺🇸
