In Ironwood, on the far western edge of the U.P., there is a sturdy little brownstone building that has been lending books to Gogebic County for more than a hundred and twenty years. 📚

The Ironwood Carnegie Library opened in 1901, built with a seventeen thousand dollar gift from Andrew Carnegie and dedicated early the next year. Local men laid up its walls of dark brownstone and brick, and it is said to be the oldest Carnegie library in Michigan still doing the job it was built for. 🏛️

Think about what that meant in a rough iron mining town at the turn of the century. A miner's kids, immigrants from a dozen countries, could walk in off the street and borrow the same books as anyone else, for free. More than a century later the doors are still open and the shelves are still full. ❤️
