Memorial Day Rescue in Black Star Canyon

On Memorial Day, OCFA’s helicopter rescue team responded to reports of two hikers stranded on a steep rock face in Black Star Canyon.

Our helicopter rescue team inserted a rescue medic, who safely performed a hoist rescue and extracted both hikers from the cliffside. Fortunately, neither individual was injured.

As temperatures rise and more people head outdoors, remember to stay on designated trails, carry plenty of water, and know your route before you go.

A few weeks ago, recruits participated in Wildland Training in Gypsum Canyon, where they practiced essential skills such as progressive hose lays. Every training exercise brings them one step closer to graduation!

Congratulations to Firefighter Paramedic Paul Kozik on completing the demanding CAL FIRE Dozer Academy in Ione! He now begins the next step in the process —completing his Initial Attack Task Book to become a certified Heavy Fire Equipment Operator (HFEO).

Paul was proud to have the support of OCFA Assistant Chief Rob Capobianco, Division Chief Sean Lowry, Battalion Chief Matt Levesque, HFEO Alan Perrault, and Handcrew Firefighter Colby Christner at his graduation. Thank you to our partners at CAL FIRE. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to participate in their renowned training program.

Outstanding work, Paul! Your dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence make us all proud.
