🍂 As autumn settles in and the school year finds its rhythm, Superintendent Heather Tow-Yick reflects on the many ways our schools and community come together. 🏫 From welcoming students each morning at Maple Hills Elementary to connecting with families at Salmon Days, she highlights the importance of belonging, engagement and partnership. She also shares upcoming opportunities to learn more about high school programs and help shape the new high school, the launch of a Mandarin dual language program in 2027 and ways families can share their voice through the district’s family and caregiver survey this month. 💬✨

Happy October! 🎃 We are featuring the months from our 2026-27 printed Student Art Calendar on and the incredible artwork it features, created by students from all grades across the district.

🌸 Featured art in this post is by Anna Han, a then-4th grader at Creekside Elementary School. Anna shared these words about the inspiration for this piece: “This painting shows four seasons as a year’s journey. I drew times with friends and family—biking, music, sports. We work, practice, and support each other together.”

🎨 *Additional art shown inside the calendar grid includes artwork by Dylan Kinsley, a then 3rd grader at Sunset Elementary. Dylan shared these words about the inspiration for this piece: “This is a water color painting of the Hawaiian sherbet sunset that was inspired by a recent trip to Oahu and Big Island. The black silhouette of the palm trees made the sunset even more spectacular.”

Each month our student art calendar includes a link to our district’s Cultural Events Calendars. View the calendars on our website: https://www.isd411.org/about-us/equity/religion-and-culture

💙 As Su***de Prevention Month comes to a close, the commitment to caring for our students, families, staff and community continues throughout the year. Taking time to check in, listen without judgment and help someone connect with support can make all the difference.

You can seek help anytime by calling or texting 988 to reach the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. The 988 lifeline (dot) org also has resources for texting, chatting, people who speak Spanish, people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and more. Students who are struggling, or worried about a friend, can also reach out to a school counselor or another trusted adult at school. Remember if there is immediate danger, call 911.

There are additional crisis contacts, su***de prevention resources and information about Care Solace, which helps connect people with mental health and substance use care, on our Counseling and Student Well-Being webpage:
https://www.isd411.org/programs-services/counseling-and-mental-health

As September ends, please continue to check in on one another, reach out when you need support and help others know they do not have to face tough times alone.

👀 Who’s that New High School? That starts with you!

Our New High School opens in fall 2027, and now through October 14, students, families, staff, alumni and community members can submit ideas for its name, mascot and school colors.

Once the survey closes, we’ll review your initial suggestions and develop a top list of options. Then you’ll have another chance to weigh in, before the School Board makes the final decision on the school's name, mascot, and colors on November 12.

➡️ Share your name, mascot and color ideas:

💡 You can also help shape what’s next at our High School Information and Community Collaboration Event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, at Pickering Barn. Meet the New High School core team, learn about its career-connected programs, and share your feedback.
