🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE SHARE 🚨

TCSO has been notified of a mortgage insurance scam reporting to be from local townships such as the Town of Ithaca. The scam is creating a fake invoice from the Town of Ithaca, as well as emailing additional fees. This scam bot gets its info from the public hearing notice posted online as required by law.

If you happen to receive an invoice or email requesting payment from any local townships, please call the township directly to verify FIRST!!

If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency and your financial institution as soon as possible.

The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office is saddened to learn of the passing of Robert C. Spencer, a retired deputy with our office.

Robert C. Spencer, fondly known to many as "Bob," passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, in Elmira at the age of 68. Born on May 8, 1958, in Ithaca, Bob was a dedicated member of his community whose life and legacy will be cherished by all who knew him.

Bob’s enduring commitment to public service was demonstrated through a distinguished career in law enforcement. He served with honor and integrity at both the Tompkins County Sheriff's Department and the Groton Police Department, retiring from each after years of devoted work.
