Dear residents in the Varna Volunteer Fire Company’s fire protection district. You are cordially invited to a public hearing on the proposed unified fire district tomorrow, October 1 at Dryden Town Hall (6:30 pm).

The proposed district would bring together Varna Volunteer Fire Company, Neptune Hose Company #1 (Dryden Fire Department) and W.B. Strong Fire Company (Freeville Fire Department). The proposal is not intended to change or disrupt fire service to residents. It would consolidate expenses and administrative work across the three departments, while supporting greater coordination and standardization of operations and services.
The hearing is the public’s first formal opportunity to learn about the proposal and share feedback. A second public hearing is expected mid-October. We encourage district residents to attend.

Hybrid Meeting Location: Public Meeting Room This meeting encompasses the Town of Dryden, Village of Dryden, and Village of Freeville. On Friday September 4th at 13:53, the Tompkins County 9-1-1 Center received a call from a third party caller on Goss St. reporting a possible fire in a neighbor’s home.

The Varna Volunteer Fire Company was immediately dispatched along with our First Alarm mutual aid partners.

Upon arrival, there was no confirmed fire until a size up of the scene was completed by Firefighter Rizzo. The crew confirmed an active fire and no occupants in the building. Effective search and fire suppression efforts ensured the fire was out by the 10 minute mark.

Chief Parker from Freeville took over command as Freeville units arrived. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.

We’re grateful for our Mutual Aid partners: Freeville’s W.B. Strong Fire Company, Neptune Hose Company, and Cayuga Heights Fire Department. As well as the assistance provided by New York State Police, NYSEG, State Fire, and Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response for providing personnel, additional apparatus, and support with a prompt response.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders whose courage and dedication were demonstrated when faced with an unimaginable tragedy.

In remembrance of the 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives that day, several of our Varna members participated in a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, climbing in honor of those who answered the call and never returned home. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

This past weekend, our members returned to the House of Hazards at the Great New York State Fair! After first being invited and having built a great partnership over the past few years, we have been excited to be back this year to help teach about fire prevention and safety.

Our members helped demonstrate several interactive stations covering kitchen fire safety, common household fire hazards, smoke detectors, the importance of closing bedroom doors, and how to safely exit through a first floor window during an emergency.

We had a great time sharing these important fire safety skills and thank you to everyone who stopped by! 🔥🚒

1️⃣ Child Abuse
2️⃣ Patient Moving
3️⃣ Firefighter Down / CPR
4️⃣ Bleeding Control
5️⃣ Motorcycle Accident
6️⃣ Status Asthmaticus
7️⃣ Psychiatric / CO Incident

We were thrilled to train alongside our neighboring agencies, including Dryden Ambulance, Neptune Hose Company, and Danby Volunteer Fire Company. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and helped to make another successful EMS Day! 🚑🚒
