💙 Invisible Disabilities Week: Nothing About Us Without Us

One of the most important ideas of the Independent Living Movement is simple:
People with disabilities are the experts in their own lives.

That matters for people with invisible disabilities, too.

When a disability cannot be seen, people may face questions, doubt, or assumptions about what they can and cannot do. They may feel pressure to explain their disability or prove why they need support or an accommodation.

Independent Living means something different.

It means having choice, control, and a voice in decisions about your own life.

It means listening when someone tells us what they need.

It means recognizing that independence does not mean doing everything alone. Sometimes independence means having the right supports, services, accommodations, and resources to live the life you choose.

And it means remembering: Nothing About Us Without Us.

During Invisible Disabilities Week, FLIC celebrates the voices, experiences, choices, and contributions of people with all types of disabilities — whether those disabilities can be seen or not.

💙 Your disability does not have to be visible for your voice to matter.

💙 Invisible Disabilities Week: Inclusion Starts With Us

Accessibility isn't only about what we can see.
Someone may need a break because of fatigue.
Someone may need extra time to process information.
Someone may use an accessible parking space but not use a wheelchair.
Someone may need a quieter environment.
Someone may cancel plans because their symptoms changed.
Someone may ask for an accommodation for a reason that isn't obvious to you.

We don't need to know someone's diagnosis or personal story before respecting what they say they need.

During Invisible Disabilities Week—and throughout the year—we can help create communities where people with all types of disabilities are heard, respected, included, and able to make their own choices.

What is one thing you can do to make your community more welcoming and accessible?

Here's a beautiful bee on one of the last flowers still shining in front of the FLIC office. This is especially cool because it is Invisible Disabilities Week, and the symbol most associated with support for those with Invisible Disabilities is the sunflower. 🌻💛

With the threats we're facing to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), Olmstead, and Section 504, it’s more critical than ever we collect stories of Disability Freedom. These stories are a crucial step for getting the LaTonya Reeves Freedom Act passed. These stories will also be used for helping us in our state-level advocacy.

Please check out this Videorequest link: https://video.videorequest.io/.../8ddfeb80-162e-4b4a-9f19...
and share with your networks!

We want to know how disability freedom improves a person’s quality of life and what it means to them. Folks have the option to either record a video or write their story in the Videorequest platform.

If you have any issues with the platform or need an alternative way to share your story, please let us know! You can email [email protected] or give her a call at (607)272-2433.
