Tropical Storm Isaias: A Name, a Prophet, and a Message of Hope
Isaias is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Isaiah, a biblical Hebrew name meaning "God is my salvation," “God is salvation,” or “Yahweh is salvation.”
It comes from the Hebrew name Yeshayahu, referring to the Old Testament prophet Isaiah.
The prophet Isaiah lived approximately 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. He was called by God to warn the people of Judah about their sins, the consequences of turning away from God, and the judgment that would follow. Yet his message was also one of hope, repentance, redemption, and God's promise of salvation.
Isaiah is particularly remembered for his prophecies concerning the coming Messiah, including Isaiah 7:14, which foretells the birth of Immanuel, and Isaiah 53, which describes the suffering servant who would bear the sins of many.
As Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast, I find it interesting that the very prophet whose name this storm bears left us words that can bring comfort and reassurance during times of uncertainty.
Isaiah 25:4 (KJV)
"For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall."
Isaiah 43:2 (KJV)
"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."
Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)
"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
We don't know what challenges this storm may bring, but we can take comfort in knowing that we do not face life's storms alone.
God never promised that we would be spared every hardship, but He has promised to be with us through them.
As we prepare for this storm, let us also remember to pray for our neighbors, look after those who may need assistance, and place our trust in the Lord.
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." ~ Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)
Stay safe, prepare wisely, and may God bless and protect each of you.
