Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month at Shirley Elementary! At Shirley Elementary, we are proud to celebrate the rich history, vibrant cultures, traditions, and many contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities! 🇲🇽🇵🇷🇨🇺🇸🇻
Did You Know? National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15 through October 15. September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This special month gives us an opportunity to learn, celebrate, and honor the diverse cultures and histories that help make our nation so special! A HUGE THANK YOU to the wonderful parents who came out to celebrate with us and helped make this day so special for our scholars! Your time, support, and willingness to share your culture with our school family made this celebration even more meaningful. Our scholars had an opportunity to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the beauty of our differences! At Shirley Elementary, we believe that “every culture adds a beautiful chapter to our story!” Together, we are “Growing Great Minds… One Story at a Time!” ❤️💙

It’s official! Our new Scholastic family joined JPS Tuesday night to present the District with the Richard M. Robinson Literacy Champion Award, a national honor recognizing progress in advancing literacy.
JPS was selected as the 2025-2026 recipient of the award, presented by Scholastic in partnership with the Council of the Great City Schools. And Shirley Elementary - JPS is at the heart of this recognition. As the district’s selected school, Shirley received a complete library transformation, including thousands of new books and resources to help scholars read, explore and grow.

We’re grateful to Scholastic for celebrating the literacy work happening across JPS and for becoming part of the Jackson Public School family. 📚

College and Career Week continued:

🎓❤️🤍💙 COLLEGE SPIRIT DAY WAS A SUCCESS! 💙🤍❤️🎓
Today, our scholars wrapped up College & Career Week with an exciting College Spirit Day filled with learning, laughter, movement, and lots of college pride! 🦅🎓
Our scholars dove into a full day of college-themed experiences designed to help them DREAM BIG and begin imagining all the possibilities their futures can hold!
🏆 College Table Wars: Scholars from all grade levels enjoyed exploring the AMAZING college displays created by our teachers! The creativity, school spirit, and friendly competition were definitely on display!
🏀 Hoop Dreams: Our scholars got moving with members of the Hinds Community College Basketball Teams, participating in basketball drills and enjoying time on the court with college athletes!
🎒 The College Experience: Our 3rd–5th grade scholars rotated through five interactive college stations where they learned while having FUN! Activities included Pack My College Backpack, College Myth or Fact, What Major for What Career, A Day in the Life of a College Student, and more!
☀️ Tailgate Finale: We ended our day with a little fun in the sun at our College Spirit Tailgate! Food, fellowship, music, college spirit, and smiling faces made for the perfect ending to an awesome week!
Our scholars had an ABSOLUTE BLAST! 🎉
A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to our college student volunteers, Hinds Community College basketball players, community volunteers, faculty, staff, and everyone who helped make today possible. And an extra special shoutout to our AMAZING teachers who brought College Table Wars to life! Your creativity and willingness to go all in for our scholars made today unforgettable! ❤️
Today was about more than college colors and school spirit. It was about exposure, possibilities, and helping our Eagles see that their dreams can take them anywhere! 🦅🎓

This month, we’re celebrating our amazing September Scholars of the Month! These scholars have started the school year strong by demonstrating hard work, dedication, positive character, and a commitment to learning.
Our September chapter, “Falling Into Learning,” is all about embracing new opportunities to grow, discover, and become our very best! To celebrate their accomplishments, our scholars enjoyed a nice, cool treat as a sweet reminder that hard work deserves to be celebrated! We are so proud of our September Scholars! Keep shining, keep learning, and keep growing those great minds! 📚
