“Deputies’ Brave Actions Save Child from Fully Engulfed House Fire in Edwards”
Press Release — Hinds County Sheriff’s Office
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office is providing an updated statement regarding the residential fire that occurred late last night in Edwards, Mississippi.
At approximately 10:00 p.m., deputies responded to a house fire in the 200 block of Utica Street after receiving reports that six children were trapped inside the burning residence. When deputies arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames, and neighbors were already attempting rescue efforts.
Neighbors successfully rescued five children—ages 13, 9, 3, 2, and 2—from the home. Deputies were informed that a four‑year‑old boy remained trapped inside.
Deputies searched the exterior and located the child unconscious in a bedroom by looking through a window. A deputy used an object to move debris and was able to reach and retrieve the child, who was not breathing at the time of rescue. CPR was immediately administered, and the child began to breathe, though he remained unconscious.
The child was transported by AMR to UMMC, where he is now listed in very critical condition this morning. The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office asks the community to keep this child in their prayers as medical staff continue efforts toward his recovery.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services has been notified and is assisting with the case. The origin and manner of the fire have not yet been determined, and investigators will be interviewing several individuals connected to the incident.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office commends the neighbors and responding deputies whose courageous actions saved multiple lives during this tragic event.
