Serving Our Heroes

Today, Mississippi Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson and his team hosted a breakfast for residents and staff at the Mississippi Veterans Home in Jackson.

Our veterans enjoyed biscuits, sausage, grits, eggs, and apple and orange juice as a gesture of appreciation from the Commissioner for their military service to our nation.

Mississippi VA extends its gratitude to Commissioner Gipson and his team for honoring America’s heroes!

Our Mississippi Veterans Home in Tradition recently celebrated Housekeeping, Laundry, and Maintenance Week to recognize our team members. The theme was “We’d be a MESS without you!”

Staff enjoyed a luncheon from Beau Rivage, snack days, and a visit from the “5K Way” food truck. Staff gave out several prizes to thank everyone for their hard work each day.

We are celebrating Mrs. Thelma Cummins’s retirement at the Mississippi Veterans Home in Oxford. She worked as a nurse for 52 years, including 21 years as a registered nurse at our Oxford facility.

Her residents and teammates have appreciated her leadership, compassion, and wisdom throughout her career. Now that she is retired, she can spend more time on her other passions, like her church family and caring for her rescue kittens.

Congratulations on a career of superior service!

Recently, team members from our agency presented at the Veterans Affairs Administrators of Mississippi (VAAMS) conference in Starkville. We highlighted 20 years of dedication to military-connected students through educational assistance and benefits.

Other attendees included representatives from Mississippi’s Institutions of Higher Learning, non-college degree programs, and on-the-job training facilities. The conference aimed to improve educational plans for our Veterans and their dependents.

Team members representing Mississippi VA included Joe Hargett, Deputy Executive Director; Cathy McGruder, State Approving Agency Division Director; and Jerry O. Johnson, State Approving Agency Education Program Specialist.

This week, some residents from our Mississippi Veterans Home in Tradition visited Chandeleur Brewery in Gulfport.

They explored the whole brewery, from the taproom to the rooms where the b**r is made. They got to smell different grains and hops and learned how each b**r gets its own flavor and color.

We appreciate Chandeleur Brewery for welcoming our Veterans and giving them such a special experience.

Residents from our Mississippi Veterans Home in Tradition organized some friendly games of poker and blackjack for fun, with no real money on the line.

Some of our staff joined in too, acting as casino dealers and servers for our ‘high rollers.’

Take a look at some photos from their Casino Night.

Gulf War veterans, please read this important update.

You have until December 31, 2026, to qualify for presumptive service connection through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This means you do not need to prove a direct link to your service. You do not have to file a claim by December 31, but you do need a healthcare provider to evaluate and document your symptoms before that date so they are on record.

If you served in the Southwest Asia theater, you are eligible for this disability benefits opportunity. You do not need to have served in combat.

If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact your local VA hospital or reach out to a Veterans Benefits Specialist in your area.

Visit msva.ms.gov/serviceofficers to get connected.
