NEW — In Black families, caregiving is often a love letter — but is it also a burden that’s too heavy for one person to carry?

In this op/ed submission, former caregivers Attorney Tanya D. Woods and Real Estate developer Lauren Lowery write about the complicated realities of being a caregiver. Navigating the sense of isolation and lacking information while managing relationships with health care professionals who lacked cultural sensitivity, plus had to cope with their own tenuous mental health.

Like many caregivers, podcast host, attorney and Westside Justice Center Executive Director Tanya D. Woods often went to bed dry crying softly into her pillow with the responsibilities of caregiving while struggling to make sense of her mother’s dementia diagnosis.

At Harper House we aim to serve the caregiver. Yes, I said that right. We serve the caregiver. If you’ve ever had to take care of someone you love, you know that caregiving is hard and can be exhausting. I want to provide respite and peace of mind for the caregiver so they’ll know their loved one will be well taken care of while they get some much needed time to themselves.
