The Mississippi State University Extension Service provides so many programs for Mississippians. Take a look at this unique program.

Work hard, sleep hard! Our horses at the MSU Extension Equine Assisted Services had to get a little rest in after their latest session.

Did you know we offered equine assisted services?
Therapeutic riding activities are individualized, specialized activities that use the horse to provide physical, emotional, and psychological benefits to children and adults with disabilities. Through carefully planned activities developed by a certified riding instructor and/or therapist, the horse is used as a treatment tool to help the rider achieve his or her goals.

Rabies protection looks different across animal species. Understanding when vaccination is recommended—and discussing individual risks with your veterinarian—is an important part of protecting animal and public health.

🦠 Rabies: Protection Looks Different for Different Species 🐶🐱🐴🐄

Rabies is a fatal disease that affects all mammals, including pets, horses and livestock. Rabies vaccines are among the most effective vaccines available and remain a reliable way to protect both animals and people, in addition to avoiding exposure.

✅ Dogs and cats: Rabies vaccination is routine and required by law in most areas. Keeping your pets current on their rabies vaccine is an important part of responsible ownership and public health.

✅ Horses: While not always legally required, many horse owners choose to vaccinate against rabies because horses may be exposed to wildlife such as bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes.

⚠️ Cattle, sheep, goats, and other ruminants: Ruminant animals (e.g., cattle, goats, sheep) are not routinely vaccinated for rabies in the U.S. Instead, vaccination decisions are typically based on a risk assessment that considers factors such as geographic location, animal occupation, wildlife exposure, herd management practices and animal value.

📞 The best approach is to discuss your animals' specific risks with your veterinarian. Together, you can determine whether rabies vaccination should be part of your herd or flock health plan.
