Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Orientation Flight Program gives cadets the opportunity to experience aviation firsthand with qualified pilots. These flights introduce cadets to the fundamentals of flight, the responsibilities of pilots, and the many possibilities available in aviation.

For some cadets, that first flight sparks a lifelong passion for flying. For others, it opens their eyes to careers in aerospace, aviation, engineering, or military service. And for every cadet, it’s an opportunity to build confidence, ask questions, and see what’s possible when they reach for something new.

This past weekend, six cadets from across the state had the opportunity to take orientation flights, and many more flights are planned throughout October.

One flight can inspire a dream. One dream can shape a future.

That’s the power of introducing young people to aviation—and one more way Civil Air Patrol helps develop tomorrow’s leaders today!

Civil Air Patrol friendships don’t end at graduation—they grow right alongside our cadets!

Midshipman 1/C Joshua Maatallah and Third Class Cadet Grace Taylor, both former members of the Madison Cadet Squadron, recently reconnected at the Navy vs. Air Force football game! What began as friendship through CAP continues as they pursue their futures at the nation’s service academies. 🇺🇸

Their journey highlights how Civil Air Patrol can be a valuable pathway to a future at a U.S. military service academy. Through leadership development, aerospace education, teamwork, and character building, CAP helps prepare cadets for the challenges and opportunities ahead. Cadets may also have access to opportunities such as the U.S. Air Force Academy’s preparatory school and service academy appointments for qualified applicants. While CAP does not guarantee admission, it can help cadets build a strong foundation for pursuing their goals.

From squadron meetings to the halls of our nation’s service academies, the lessons learned and friendships made in CAP continue to make a difference.

Learning to fly a drone today can open doors to a career tomorrow!

From precision agriculture and surveying to construction and emergency response, drone skills have practical applications across Mississippi.

Young people can even earn their FAA Remote Pilot Certificate at age 16, giving them an opportunity to build a professional credential while still in high school.

Through hands-on drone training, Civil Air Patrol cadets explore technology, practice sound decision-making, and discover where their interests could take them.

CAP Friendships Go Beyond the Squadron! ✈️

C/2d Lt Zach Clark recently moved to Hattiesburg to attend the University of Southern Mississippi and transferred from Madison Cadet Squadron to Pine Belt Composite Squadron. Recognizing his strong character and leadership, MS-072 welcomed him as its new Cadet Commander!

But some friendships travel farther than any transfer. On his first night in his new role, C/1st Lt Byron Croker, C/2d Lt PR Dixon, and Maj Jessica Dixon—Clark’s former squadron members—drove halfway across the state to support him.

Their support is a powerful reminder that CAP builds more than leaders; it builds lifelong friendships. Wherever the journey leads, the bonds of the CAP family remain strong!
