Eudora Welty House & Garden A literary house museum and historic garden where Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eudora Welty lived and wrote for 76 years. and 3 p.m. Reservations required.

Eudora Welty was born in 1909 in Jackson, Mississippi. She moved to 1119 Pinehurst Street with her family when she was sixteen years old. Her parents built the Tudor-Revival style home in what is now known as the Belhaven neighborhood, just north of downtown Jackson. Eudora Welty’s mother, Chestina, designed the garden in 1925, while the house was being constructed. Eudora lived there for the remainder of her life in between her extensive travels. She kept her upstairs bedroom as a place to work and write and maintained her mother's garden throughout her life. Before her death in 2001, Welty donated her house to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. In 2006, the home opened to the public as one of the most intact literary house museums. Expert preservation of her manuscripts, memorabilia, and personal belongings keep her home feeling alive, maintaining forever her sense of place. TOURS

Start your Halloween weekend with a special outdoor screening of Sinners (2025) in the Welty Garden on Friday, October 30, 2026!

Award‑winning director Ryan Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw drew visual inspiration from Eudora Welty’s photographs of Mississippi during the Great Depression, and we’re grateful to the Mississippi Film Society for helping us bring this film to the Welty House.

Grounds open at 6:00 p.m. and the screening begins at 6:30 p.m. We’ll be using wireless silent‑disco headphones to deliver excellent sound while keeping the garden atmosphere relaxed and community‑friendly. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs or blankets for a movie picnic. Enjoy free popcorn and lemonade, and purchase a themed cocktail if you're 21+.

This event is free, but due to the film’s rating, registration is required. Email [email protected] or visit our events calendar at welty.mdah.ms.gov/events-calendar for the sing-up link!

We hope you’ll join us for an evening of blues, and a bloody good time!

Happy anniversary to Christian and Chestina Welty!

Eudora Welty’s parents weren’t originally from Mississippi—Christian Welty of Logan, Ohio met Chestina Andrews, a schoolteacher in West Virginia, in 1903, and the young couple were married in the Andrews farmhouse in October 1904. As newlyweds, they boarded a train to the World’s Fair in St. Louis before relocating south—leaving the final choice of destination to Chestina.

In "One Writer’s Garden," Susan Haltom notes that during their engagement Christian “researched up‑and‑coming places that would be affordable on a starting salary.” He narrowed the options to upstate New York and Jackson, Mississippi. Once the Weltys settled in Jackson, Christian joined Lamar Life Insurance and quickly rose through the ranks, while Chestina welcomed their three children: Eudora, Edward, and Walter.

Together, Christian and Chestina created a home filled with books, curiosity, creativity, and plenty of unsanctioned play in the green spaces of Jackson along with a family culture that helped shape one of America’s greatest writers.

The Mississippi State Fair returns to Jackson this week, and we're reminiscing with photographs taken by Eudora Welty at the fair while working for the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s.

"One Time, One Place," first published in 1971, created a record of an impoverished Mississippi that, against great odds, sustained a strong sense of community.

The book was reprinted by the University Press of Mississippi in February 2026, presenting the one hundred photographs originally selected by Miss Welty digitally scanned for the first time to maximize their contrast and the beauty of her vision.

Stop by the Eudora Welty House & Garden gift shop to pick up your copy of the new "One Time, One Place."
