As bears search for every calorie they can find before heading into hibernation, they’re especially motivated to seek out easy food sources - including unsecured trash.

Teton County’s Land Development Regulations (LDRs) require bear‑resistant trash containers for a reason: they work.

In this video, hear from Teton County Code Compliance Officer
Rebecca Sullivan about how securing garbage in approved bear‑proof containers helps remove a major attractant that can draw bears into our neighborhoods in search of a quick meal.

Remember, every time a bear gets a “food reward,” it increases the likelihood of repeat visits, putting both wildlife and our community at risk.

Let’s all do our part to keep bears wild and safe — not in our trash

🌙 Finding the sweet spot between safety and dark skies!

On Thursday night, Teton County staff joined partners from Wyoming Game and Fish and Wyoming Stargazing at Stilson to evaluate the facility’s programmable lighting.

We assessed the lights at both their brighter setting and their dimmed setting, which activates when no movement is detected. Our top priority is ensuring the safety of everyone using the facility, while also minimizing impacts on wildlife and neighboring residents.

After evaluating the lighting in real-world conditions, we believe we found the right balance and adjusted every light pole accordingly.

We also had some special guests join us: Jackson Hole Middle School robotics students who have been working on a dark skies project. They were excited to see how the concepts they’ve been studying in the classroom connect to real-world decisions happening right here in our community. What a great opportunity to bring learning to life!

A big thank-you to all our partners and the students who joined us in working toward a safer, darker-sky-friendly Stilson! 🌌
