MLC 100 in Retrospect!

In 2020, MLC buried a time capsule that, when opened, will reveal how the pandemic affected Mississippi public libraries and the steps they took, obstacles they faced, and adjustments they made across the state.

The time capsule contains event documentation, staff information, executive orders from the governor, a map of all library systems in Mississippi, pandemic information from various Mississippi libraries, masks, 6 ft social distancing signs, and USB flash drives containing pandemic information.

The time capsule will be sealed and buried until 2040. It is marked with a special outdoor plaque so it will be easy to find when it is time to unearth.

Happy National Friends of Libraries Week!

This week, we celebrate Friends of Libraries groups whose dedication and support help Mississippi’s libraries thrive!

Our Friends of Libraries groups fundraise and volunteer to support library programs and encourage a love of reading; they play an important role in connecting libraries with their communities.

Thank you to all the Friends of Libraries who help make our Mississippi public libraries welcoming, vibrant, and connected!

Show your local Friends of the Library some appreciation this week!

A good library can be there for you through just about anything.

As Anne Herbert reminds us, “Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries.”

Libraries provide free access to books, information, technology, programs, and so much more. They are places where everyone can learn, connect, and find something they need.

What is one thing you love most about your local library? Let us know in the comments!

MLC 100 in Retrospect!

In 2019, the Ackerman and Weir libraries joined to form the Choctaw County Library System (CCLS), with the main branch reopening in Ackerman in 2018 after being closed for several months.

CCLS transitioned from being part of the Tombigbee Regional Library System to an independent system fully funded by Choctaw County. The system's first major accomplishment was the opening of the Weir branch in 2019.

MLC 100 in Retrospect!

In 2017, the MLC Center for the Book announced the creation of a new Mississippi Literary Map, funded by a Bicentennial Grant through the Mississippi Humanities Council. 21 Mississippi authors were represented on the map by a portrait, created by noted Mississippi artist Ginger Williams Cook, who is known for her illustrative, whimsical portraits.

The map features many of Mississippi’s most noted writers, represented through text and portraits. The selected authors represent a sample of Mississippi writers who have received national recognition and honors, including Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes.
